You do not say what operating system you are running. You can try a pram reset. Command/Option/P/R key at startup for three chimes. Also if running lion or newer use the recovery partition-Comman/R or Option/R to get to disk utilities and check or repair boot volume, also permissions. If running snow leopard, use the install disk. If no install disk use single user to check and repair boot volume.https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176

Hi thanks for info..Tried a couple of things you subjected but came up with blue screen.

    Back to square 1

System is 10.6.8 I shut down computer restarted.. have a blue screen and able to move mouse around.. Not sure how I got the apple screen before.

I did a safe mode start, got to utilities and was able to do a verify disk permissions and a repair. Restarted and now back to blue screen.

The computer is my mother in laws.. She was away and her son used it...... He said update to Safari came up and he clicked on it and here we are at a blue screen.. lots of mystery!

    thanks

Since you can boot to safe mode,It means that something on startup is stoping it from going to full desktop. In safe boot ,you cannot repair the boot volume from utilities . Only verify it. You can however repair permissions. Did  your brother in law download and install anything other than a safari update. And did he let it complete the update. If you can run in safe mode,I would nose around in there and see if you can find anything that might cause it to hang. In safe mode safari should work. If not the the update was corrupted.http://macs.about.com/od/MacTroubleshootingTips/qt/Troubleshooting-Mac-Startup-P roblems-Stuck-At-T
