Q: Is my problem with my iPod or my car stereo?

In my car, I have a Pioneer AVH-P2400BT stereo head unit.  I keep all my music & audiobooks on my 160GB IPod Classic.  I’ve used the two together for a couple years now and never had any problems until recently.  About a week ago, the display on the head unit showed “Incompatible USB.”  After resetting the cable on both ends, powering off & on the head unit, and rebooting then IPod, nothing helped.  I replaced the cable and it began working again… for a short time.  This new cable seemed to establish a connection but only for a few minutes, then the head unit would display “No device” and the IPod would show it has disconnected.  I tried a third cable and for a period of about a day this appeared to have fixed the issue as music played for several hours with no interruption.  Then it reverted back to “No device” on the head unit as if the cable had been disconnected.  If I physically disconnect and reconnect the cable, this will sometimes fix the situation, but the same problem reoccurs soon after.  Sometimes I have to reconnect the cable several times before it actually holds a connection.  For instance, after I reconnect the cable, it may show all the signs as if it is about to start playing music, then nothing, “No device.”

I’d like to get this resolved, but I can’t figure out if this is an issue with the head unit or the IPod, so I’m not sure which needs to be fixed or replaced.  If anybody has any input on this I’d appreciate it.

Thanks
