Many bluetooth devices need to be in a "pairing mode"  in order to be detected by your phone. This prevents strangers from pairing with your bluetooth device and messing with it.
I have a bluetooth speaker that requires me to hold down a pairing button to put it in pairing mode so that it can be detectable by my iPhone. After it detects the speaker the first time and pairs with it, it should be able to connect automatically from then on.

Read the instruction booklet that came with your speaker to see if your speaker has a similar mode that must be activated before a phone can discover and pair with it.
