When are you getting the 'nearly full' message ? If you've bought extra storage then it should show in Settings > iCloud > Storage on your iPad and allow you to back up more content from your device(s) - is it showing there ?

Yes, it shows 19.9 GB available in cloud storage - but how do I use that storage? When I download anew app, that's when I get the "almost full" message.

another reply said "You can't put apps on cloud storage, so I am still .wondering how I can make use of my extra storage?

The message you are getting refers to storage on your iPad, not on iCloud. The extra storage you've bought is for iCloud - you cannot increase the storage on your iPad, and apps can only be run there, not from iCloud. iCloud storage is for documents, backups, synced data such as calendars and contacts, and so on.

Thank you.  That explains my problem. so it looks like I am wasting my money purchasing the extra 20 GB because I rarely use my iPad for documents etc.  Only apps - lots of them.  Many thanks.

You have bought extra space for your device backups (photos, documents, files etc), if you want to download extra content onto your iPad then you will have to delete some of your existing content from your iPad.

You can see how much space each app (the app itself and its content) is taking up on your iPad via Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage (under the 'storage' heading) - and you can delete apps (those that you've downloaded from the store, you can't delete built-in app) from there (before you delete an app make sure that you've copied off anything important in them e.g. any documents), or via the iPad's home screens.
