iPod Classic 4th gen not showing on Mac

I have an iPod classic with the following specs:-

iPod Classic - 4th generation

Model: MA003LL

When I connect it to my MacBook Air, it does not show up on iTunes and is not recognized. I am therefore not able to sync my iPod nor add music to it or even change the settings or restore it. I currently have the latest iTunes software as well as updated my software on my Mac.

However, when I connect it to a PC, it is automatically recognized and functions normally. The iTunes version I have on the Mac is 1 or 2 years older. It also shows that the iPod is formatted as windows. In all cases, I can't change anything about the iPod or see it on my Mac. What should I do?

iPod classic, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)
