Q: how do I get 10.8 on a 10.9 machine

My son has a mac mini with os 10.9 on it.  His birthday is coming up and I would like to get him a piece of 3d software that is only supported up to 10.8.

Is it possible to get the previous os onto it?

It is still possible to purchase Mountain Lion for $20: http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion. After you buy it, you will receive two e-mails. One will have a locked PDF attached to it, which contains the redemption code that you will use with the App Store. The other e-mail contains the password needed to unlock the PDF. After you get the redemption code, go the the main page (Featured) of the App Store and look at the links found on the upper right beneath the banner. One of them should say "Redeem". That is where you enter the redemption code. You should then be able to download Mountain Lion, but unfortunately the App Store is such a buggy piece of annoyance that you may have trouble unless you are booted from an earlier OS. Allow a few days for getting the e-mails. It should be quick, but it isn't.
