Lost an item in iCloud

While composing a paper for a talk, I was interrupted by the requirement that Pages now be in iCloud. I "saved" the paper, but could not find it anywhere. I had to rush to rewrite an earlier draft saved to my desk top. When I go to iCloud, I don't find it. I am not Apple Applications savvy. How do I manage iCloud? Are there a number of things to do? I don't have any other device - not even a cell phone - so it is just for my iMac.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

There is no "requirement", you can save files wherever you want (including wherever you used to save them), the choice, as always. is yours.

All files saved to iCloud are also saved on your Mac, specifically they are in ~/library/mobile documents

Well, I couldn't find a way to get rid of the request that covered my document-in-process except to go along with it. As I said, I am a 91 year old not so savvy computer user.

As to your recommendation: I could only find Library.new. When I went there nothing showed mobile documents. I did go to the (what called?) magnifying glass and got to mobile documents but there was nothing in there that I have created, only mostly various user's guides.

I finally learned to cope with my last OS, then upgraded to Yosemite and am having to find things all over again.

Thanks for your suggestion but this is what I could do and it did not help. Any other thoughts?

There are only about five items in there. None has the title I gave the document when working on earlier drafts. Nothing possibly related to the topic. My only thought of the possibility that I did not yet entitle the edited paper I was working on and the outside chance that the "untitled " document might be it. That is the only one I cannot open. I can open all the others.

I am sorry - I live in a retirement community and must go to supper now. I will pick up your response later. I appreciate your help.
