DesktopsThe Mac is inherently a Multi-User system, even if you are the only one using it.
It is very unlikely your files are GONE, it is far more likely they are now inaccessible to the current settings for your current User-Id.

Desktopsa User's files are stored at:
/Users/<yourshortusername>
The information in Users&Groups and the name of the directory must match EXACTLY.
