deleting photos, empty trash

I've deleted multiple gigs worth of photos and movies from iPhone 6. There are only 11 photos left, about 16 mb worth. with iTunes, summary reads 25 gb of photos on the phone. I already selected the deleted photos folder on iPhone and deleted, they are still there. Image capture only sees the 11 remaining photos, iCloud drive is OFF for photos. How can I empty the trash absolutely?

iPhone 6, iOS 8.2

Open Photos. Go to Albums. Click on Recently Deleted album. Select the photos you want to permanently delete one at a time and delete — or wait 30 days and they will delete automatically.

(this new feature threw me for a loop, too.)
