why mont my macbook play sound

whenever i take my headphones out my mac wont play sound can anyone help ?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Disconnect the headphones and click on {Apple}->System Preferences->Sound->Output. What is listed in the top pane? What are the settings?
