Q: how to use QuickTime with OS 10.9.5

I would like to watch downloaded files of a TV series which are on my hard drive.  However, 4 of the downloaded files will not play using QuickTime.  Episodes 5 through 11 are fine.  I borrowed an external drive from a friend who downloaded the same and have attached the external drive to my laptop--same problem.  I downloaded the previous QuickTime Player but that doesn't help either.  Please--any suggestions?

Since it is unlikely that two different people downloading the same files would end up with the same files being corrupted... Were episodes 1-4 encoded using the same compression formats as 5-11? Do episodes 1-4 open in an alternative media player like VLC? What error message, if any, is given for not opening?
