How do I get iTunes to stop deleting music off my 5th gen when I plug it in?

My 5th gen iPod touch get's all the music deleted off it when I plug it into my computer, but iTunes says the music is still on it. How do I really get my old music back on it because syncing it and restoring it to past back ups doesn't work.

iPod touch, iOS 8.2

In Settings > General > About, what does it say about the number of songs, and capacity Available?

There could be something amiss with your Sync settings.

I find a setup like the one below works well. You can select Artists, albums, playlists to sync then press Apply. If you unselect something, it will be deleted from your device when you sync.
