Q: Can I transfer my iWeb files to new iMac running Yosemite

I have recently purchased a new iMac running Yosemite 10.10.2. I have a set of iWeb files that I was working on but had not yet published as a website on my old iMac which is running OS X 10.5.8. Is it possible to transfer these files to the new mac? I can't find any iWork or iLife files in the Applications folder on my new mac.

Yes, you can transfer the files, but you will be unable to open them, because as you have found, new Macs have not shipped with iWeb installed on them for a long time now - iWeb as you may or may not know is very old software now that has not been sold or supported by Apple for at least 3 years.

The only other way that you will be able to get iWeb onto your new Mac is buy a copy of iLife 11 or iLife 09, both of which contained the final version of iWeb - which is iWeb 09.  You would need to purchase this from Amazon.  You could try an old installation CD that came with your other Mac if you still have it and you could try installing iWeb onto your new iMac from that, but if it does not work, then you'll have to buy a copy of iLife 11 or 09 from Amazon.

Your other alternatives of course are to find some new web creation software that is supported or you continue to use iWeb on your old Mac and just update and publish your sites from that machine.

In the end though, it might just be easier to bite the bullet and move onto some new software and re-build you site with that.

Software that is worth taking a look at is RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express, WebAcappella 4, Flux V and EverWeb.  Then don't forget all the online website builders that you have, that are slightly different, such as WordPress.com, Wix.com and others.

Other alternatives are then the Content Management Systems such as Drupal, Joomla and WordPress.org.

I would suggest that you take a look at EverWeb first though - it is very much like the iWeb interface and can do a lot more than iWeb could out of the box, such as contact forms included, SEO included, drop down menus, master pages, support for PayPal with widgets and lots more.

Take and look and you can download a trial version before you buy.

There are lots of different options available to you, but ultimately, if you want to continue using iWeb on your new Mac, then you'll have to buy iLife form Amazon.  Time to move on perhaps?!!

    Thanks Ethmoid

That is what I suspected. A shame to see a lot of work lost ( many hours gone) but I'll look into these other ones - already investigating Wordpress. Do you have any advice for which is best? I am a moderately competent computer user - not good with code though.

What you use would depend on what kind of site you want.  So if you want a personal site or a business site, then EverWeb might be okay for you and you don't need to use any kind of code - everything out of the box with EverWeb.

If you want a business site, then WordPress.org might be good, or Wordpress.com might be good enough for you to use instead.

I did purchase EverWeb and used it to re-create one of my sites, but then quickly moved on to Drupal, because I have a business site and wanted to do things like membership of the site and member only pages etc. that can easily be done with a CMS such as Drupal and not so easily with other software.

If you have a small site, then EverWeb would be okay, but consider if you want to keep website files on your computer and upload them?  If you don't want to do that and want something that is quick and easy to build, access and alter entirely online without the need for files, then go for either a CMS or something like WordPress.com instead.

Thanks again Ethmoid. Based on your advice I think I'll try Wordpress, Everweb sound like something I might outgrow. It's just a small site to start with, but I want the capacity to grow. I might also check out Drupal.

    Thanks for the advice

    Cheers
