I downloaded au audiobook from iTunes onto my iMac, but I really want to listen to it from my iPhone. I can't seem to get it to transfer to my phone, any suggestions? iTunes on my phone keeps trying to get me to buy it again.
Click on the Audiobooks icon at top left of iTunes window. It should be there. You can then drag it to your phone, or in File > Devices you can Sync iPhone.

Great - but how do i get them to PLAY?! They don't show up in the Music player and they aren't in Audiobooks!!!😠

Does this also applies to podcast? I have podcast episodes on my iPod and i want to transfer it to the mac-mini that am using. I made a back-up already but it only back-up the apps. music and podcast not yet and i want to you how.

Connect your iPod to the MacMini then select your device at the top of the iTunes page, then Podcasts under Settings on the left. You can then check the box for the podcast on the right. Then hit the Apply button on bottom right. This works for Music too.
do i need to click the sync podcast box? if yes, a window pops out saying all saved podcast in the ipod from a different library will be lost and only the new ones will be saved?

Yes, the syncing works from iTunes to the device, not in reverse. To move stuff from your iPod to iTunes on your Mac you need third-party software. Or if you can get to the original sources you could download them directly. See this guide by turingtest2: Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device

Took me a while to figure out. The audiobook is played from the iBooks app.
