Airport Express Extending Unsecured Network via WiFi

I am currently in a dorm and my room does not have a great connection. I'm trying to use my express to extend the wifi to get a better connection. Am I able to get the express to connect to the wireless network and then rebroadcast or do I have to hook it up via ethernet first in order to extend the network? I've tried creating a new network and then switching to extend. It allows me to pick the unsecured network but then says there was a problem extending it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You might be able to do what you want....and also have your own private network.

The downside is that it will take two AirPort Express devices to do it.

The first Express joins the wireless network as yours is doing now and connects to the second Express using an Ethernet cable. The second Express is set up to "create a wireless network" with a wireless network name and password that you choose.

Don't even consider the second Express though, unless you can get your current Express to join the network and deliver an Ethernet signal to your computer. Turn off the wireless on the computer and test to see what kind of connection that you can get that way. You want to see a good, fast Internet signal.

If the connection is good on your "test", then adding a second Express might work for you. But, do not buy a second Express unless you have a clear understanding of the store's return policy, since you won't know how well.......or even if......the two Express network will work until you set it up and try it out in your room.
