iMac without the hum?

Does anyone have a new 17", 20" or 24" iMac that does not hum when the brightness is adjusted?

To me, it sounds like a low-level buzz going in and out, in and out. I live in an apartment building, and during the warmer weather, other people's air conditioners would make a similar sound. I thought it was the air conditioners making the sound, but since they've been off for a while, it's definitely coming from my iMac. I just shut down my machine and the sound left. Even while I'm playing a station from iTunes radio, I can still hear it. It's not driving me batty, but it's becoming a little bothersome.

just an fyi... i was recently in my local Apple Store, and when i asked the salesperson to comment on the humm issues surrounding the new iMacs, he said that, like in any factory situation, you can get a worker who, i quote: "didn't have enough coffee during his shift, and wasn't paying enough attention when he was putting the machine together". in other words, it's a random anomaly, and is not due to product difficiencies...

comments?

I have had my 24" for about a week or so, and seemingly at random, it started buzzing yesterday. The machine makes two noises.

The first is a low level hum which it has exhibited all the time. I think it is the fans. Doesn't bother me at all.

This new noise appeared at random yesterday. It is definitely a buzzing noise, and varies when the display brightness is adjusted up or down. It does not go away if the brightness is turned down completely.

This new noise is really annoying. Is anyone else experiencing this? It is quite a piercing buzz. I can't work out if it is the display or a fan in the casing.

Another thing - If I cover the vent on the back of the machine towards the top left of the screen with my hand, it mutes the buzzing a little.

Really at my wits end here, if anyone can shed any more light on this please do. For people that have had their BTO macs replaced, how long have apple taken to ship the new ones out?

thanks in advance,

Ed

I've had my 24" for about a month and the brightness has been set to the lowest level for about 3 weeks.
The low-level hum is definitely annoying.. Hopefully this is something Apple can take care of, though I'm not confident they can.

This is my 3rd machine in the last 2 years that I've had issues with. My faith in Apple's quality is a fraction of what it used to be!

I think everyone here is over reacting. Any piece of machinery that has moving parts is going to make noise of some kind. This machine has a hard drive in it. Hard drives make noise. I think these units also have a fan in them. Fans make noise.

I don't think you'll find anything on Apple's site promising that the iMac will be perfectly silent. And to be honest, compared to the jet engine roar that comes from my HP laptop, the tiny little hum I hear from my iMac is a blessing.
