Q: 2007 iMac hangs on startup. White screen after startup sound

Happened after an update and then reboot - unplugged everything connected and and waited some time before restoring power and restart still same Result.  Boot with shift key down no help.

iMac (24-inch Mid 2007), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
