Q: Kernel Panics in 2008 MacBook Pro

I have a early 2008 17" MacBook Pro with all the original ram and I've been having kernel panics and freezes that make it no longer reliable. I'm running Yosemite OS 10.10.2.  After it freezes, and I force a restart, the screen turns pink and grey with the startup Apple half-way greyed out and the some of it a strange green/pink. I'm curious if there a way to fix it - and also be sure it's fixed - or should I just trash it (somehow). I'd love to keep it as a spare but I don't know how to determine what is wrong or what the cost to fix it might be. Any suggestions?
