intermittent loud fan sounds

My MacBook Pro 10.1 has been making very loud fan sounds intermittently for a while. I'll be working (word processing) or browsing the Internet, when all of a sudden it starts making really loud fan sounds. If I stop what I'm doing and leave it alone for a while, it stops. At first I thought it might be overheating, so I put it on a special laptop cooling thing (so air can circulate all around it)...but that doesn't seem to be helping.

I do usually have multiple windows and tabs open in Safari. Though I've been doing this since I got it a year and a half ago without issue until now. This problem only started over the last month.

I ran a diagnostic on it last night, and I got a 4HDD/11/40000000:SATA(0,0) error.

The Apple Hardware Test is probably irrelevant:

If the SMC reset fails to solve the problem. down load iStat menus:

http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/

Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.

When the fans start spinning look at both and see what application is using a lot of CPU resources:

Post back the results.
