Q: Help! MacBook pro 13"(2013) screen black and only access HDMI

Hello,

How do I know if my screen is broken. I can access via HDMI on the TV only.

Is there any test to be sure it's not a SW problem, some settings that completely turned off the monitor?

Txs!

    Greetings MacFred-BE,

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

It seems like your MacBook Pro can output video via HDMI, but the built in display shows a black screen.

There are a few steps that can help rule out a software issue or isolate this behavior to the display.

If you haven't already, try restarting the Mac and then disconnecting the HDMI cable. If you still don't see any video, try these hardware resets next:

Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support

You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.

You can also try booting to OS X Recovery:

OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

To start your computer from Recovery, restart your Mac and hold down the Command and R keys at startup.

    Best Regards,

    Jeremy

I have recently upgraded to Yosemite OSX and frequently my MBP (Early 2011) freezes at startup with grey screen and at shutdown with black screen. I have done a couple of things. I have tried resetting PRAM and SMC, but non of them works. Some other thread also talks about not changing the default apple desktop image. That did not work as well. I have performed Apple Diagnostic Test (AHT) to see if there is any hardware failure. None of my hardware are faulty. I came across a thread talking about overheating of MBP. Then I install the "SMC Fan Control" app to increase the minimum fan speed from 2000 rpm to 3500 rpm. Now my MBP is running normally. You can also replace the thermal paste on those chips (i.e. CPU, GPU) adjacent to the heat sink to lower your MBP temperature. Hope this helps.
