Q: New files don't appear in Finder in Yosemite

Hi All,

I have a MacBook Air (6,2) that is currently running 10.10.2. When I first got the Mac it was running Mavericks and I didn't experience any problems with it. Since I've updated to Yosemite however, I often have problems with newly saved files not appearing in Finder windows.

That is, when I using an app such as word or outlook, powerpoint, etc and I save a new file somewhere on my internal SSD, when I browse to the save location the file simply isn't visible. It doesn't matter if I change the view from list view to icon view, the newly saved file simply doesn't show up. At that point if I open the app that reads the missing file (for example Microsoft Word), and then choose 'File' > 'Open'  and navigate to the saved location, Word can see the file and allow me to open it, however it's still not visible in the Finder window.

This problem doesn't happen every time I save a new file, but it happens enough that it's become an annoyance. It happens with all sorts of files too, not just Microsoft Office files. For instance if I use Grab to save a screen capture, the saved .tif file sometimes won't show up in the Finder window where it was saved. If I close the Finder window and reopen it and navigate back to the save location the file does not appear. However eventually the newly saved file does appear in the Finder window after some undefined period of time (however I haven't been able to figure out what causes it to appear, i.e. reboot, logout, etc).

When I save a file to a location and it doesn't appear in the Finder, all I can do at that point is to re-save the file but to a different save location and hope that I can see it in the alternative save location.

I've done some searching and saw other people have reported problems with viewing files in Yosemite, but there's were related to Dropbox, or only occurred in icon view, or their files disappeared from Finder during their Yosemite upgrade, so this problem seems a little different.

Anybody else experienced this problem or have any insight?

Cheers

THANK YOU SO MUCH! You describing this was a lifesaver. This just happened to me last night. I thought all of my work was lost because it wasn't in my recent files, spotlight or anywhere I could actually find on my drive. I did find it in my Office 2011 Auto Recovery even though I thought I saved it in my documents folder. But I only found this after opening back up excel to open a file.

No problem, am glad my post was helpful for you

Can you please tell me what sort of Mac you are experiencing this problem on? i.e. MacBook Air? iMac? etc. I'm having this problem on a mid-2013 13" MacBook Air. I just installed the 10.10.3 Yosemite update so I'll see if this problem continues to occur despite the update.

I'm having this same problem on my 13" Late-2013 Retina Macbook Pro with Yosemite 10.10.3 installed.

Anyone found any solutions to the problem?

I'm still having this problem on my MacBook Air.

Yesterday I uploaded a bunch of photos to Dropbox from my phone. The files were downloaded onto my MacBook Air, however they didn't appear in the Finder. The next day the picture files were all visible (after the Mac had been put to sleep overnight)

Today I printed a webpage to PDF, however it didn't appear in Finder after I saved it. So I restarted my MacBook Air checked, and the pdf was magically visible. So if you encounter this problem and desperately need to access a file that hasn't appeared, then try restarting your Mac.

    Come on, Apple! Fix this!

same here, i am fully updated on osx and all apps on my mid 2013 macbook air, and when working in photoshop, word, excel, etc I don't see my files in finder for several minutes (5 to 10). they do show up if i close then reopen the app...but only after i reopen it. and its not consistent, like every time i use photoshop or every time i create a new file, etc. btw i dont use dropbox so its not related to that.

this is a new behavior that just started with the 10.10.3 update.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.

I have been experiencing this problem for the last few releases of OS X at least. I find that keeping a finder window open at the "All My Files" level (i.e. CMD-N in the finder) will force other finder windows to update. It seems this might be a spotlight issue and that keeping the AMF window open forces an update. It still takes a few seconds but it does update eventually.

I'll give that try (keeping an All My Files window open). I've found that when a file or folder is missing, if I right click and then choose 'get info', sometimes the missing file or folder immediately appears. Doesn't work all the time though.

Yosemite has some serious problems in it. Just earlier I was working on a word document and received an error message stating that my work was unable to be saved because the disk I was attempting to write to was full. Meanwhile my SSD that I've been working from has 48GB free. The error message even named my SSD as the disk that was full.

I just submitted feedback to Apple on this issue and provided them with the link for this thread. Hopefully someone will come across and give it a read.

Am seriously considering downgrading to Mavericks, as I've been experiencing these problems on my work MacBook Air, and it's affecting my work.

    I have a Late 2012 27" iMac. 3.4GHz Intel Core i7. Running OSX 10.10.3

I’ve been having this problem intermittently too.

For example, the other day I wanted to add an attachment in Mail that I had just created. But when I navigated to where I’d saved it - it wasn’t there. I could, however, see it in Finder when I clicked on the Today cog. So I knew I’d saved it to the right folder. I got around the problem by closing Mail and re-opening it. After that I could see the file I wanted to add as an attachment. But, obviously, I shouldn’t have needed to do that!

I’ll try CMD-N from now on and see if it makes a difference

I’ll also submit feedback to Apple as advised

    Just one other thing:

I’ve found another forum that discusses a related issue of opening folders and finding them, apparently, to be empty. I’ve had this problem too:

    http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/os-x-operating-system/318597-finder-yosemite-ti mes-not-showing-files-folders.html

One member (Daedac) offers this solution:

As far as I can tell, clearing the cloudd metadata worked for me. I used:

    cp ~/Library/Caches/CloudKit/CloudKitMetadata* ~/Desktop/cloudd; rm ~/Library/Caches/CloudKit/CloudKitMetadata*; killall cloudd

    - I haven’t tried it myself because I’m wary of putting strange code into the Terminal. But I thought I’d bring it to the attention of members of this forum.

Question for all of you.  Do you all have Dropbox installed?  I haven't necessarily experienced what the original posted experienced with apps, but I do have this problem with screenshots.  Take a screenshot (yes I am doing the correct keystrokes) and sometimes they appear via finder and sometimes they don't, but show up later.  This started with Yosemite.  I also have Dropbox installed.  I am wondering if this could be the common amongst all of us?

I have this issue as well and it is maddening. I usually end up using the "Find" to find the file. I also have Dropbox installed. It started for me when I updated my 2012 Mac Book Pro to Yosemite. Dropbox was installed on Lion too, but there were no issues of this nature.

I have had this problem too. It occurs when transferring files through any means other than the Finder, such as FTP, shell/command-line tools. This is really a show-stopper level bug that needs to be fixed.

To make these invisible files visible, in Finder, create a new folder, then delete it. This will refresh Finder's list and show the new files.

Yes. This is quite maddening. If I resave it, it asks if I want to replace the file, but I can't find the file when I look for it. Which ****** me off when I need it to attach to an email. If I create a new file, or folder, then it will suddenly appear.  This has got to be fixed!

Same issue here. Been happening since 10.10.2 (or 3) I think.

The All My Files workaround is a help. Previously I've been editing the name of a file in the folder, which forces a refresh, then editing it back!!

Hopefully this will get fixed soon.
