Custom error sounds

Hi all

I can't believe I'm posting this, but I'm currently stumped... once upon a time it was really easy to add your own error sounds into the Mac OS (7, 8, 8.5, 9)... long ago I stopped doing this (about the same time I stopped putting custom icons on all my folders and hard drives), but I was just trying to do it in OS X.... it won't let me.

I could copy 'em in to the sound folder in system:library - but there are some sounds - such as 'CTU24' - that have appeared 'of their own volition' in my sound effects panel, and these do not appear in this folder. They are also flagged as 'Custom' as opposed to 'Built-in'. I realise they haven't just appeared here, and that they have been imported into here somehow, but I can't figure out how. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi, Flea.

To add custom alert sounds, add sound files in AIFF format (and with .aiff extension) to either:

• Your Home > Library > Sounds folder to use the sound exclusively in your account.

• The Macintosh HD > Library > Sounds folder so it can be used by any account on your Mac.

The files must be in AIFF format. You can convert sound files to specific formats — e.g. .wav to .aiff — using QuickTime Pro or other utilities you can find by searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker.

As to "CYU24" I don't know. This Google search may give you some clues, e.g. perhaps a ring tone you downloaded?

Good luck!

Hi Smoke

Thanks for that - I had been checking the main sounds library, not my home one - the files installed were indeed found therein.

I also figured out that the CTU24 tone (which is the ringtone from the popular TV series '24') was installed by Skype - which must have done this when I selected the ringtone as an alert sound.

Thanks again for your help. 🙂
