Macbook unable to update from 10.6.3 to 10.6.6

I recently was given a 2008 macbook that was running OSX 10.5.3. I bought the Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD and successfully updated the computer to that version of Snow Leopard. I would like to continue updating the OSX to 10.6.6 so that I can have the app store and consequently update it to Yosemite. But every time I run system update, it downloads the software and asks to restart the computer. I restart the computer and it doesn't restart properly and gets stuck on the blue galaxy open screen and stays there. I've tried selecting "restart later" and manually starting the update but the same thing happens. I'm not sure where to go next to resolve the issue.

Your problem, hardware or software, may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this older thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread, which can also result in you applying the wrong advice to your particular problem.

In order for us to give your problem our proper attention to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac or iDevice you are using, what operating system, and what version of the application in question. Please remember to post in the forum relevant to your hardware or version of OS X. A full list of all the support forums is here:

You are welcome.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher

Your Mac needs:

  • OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
  • 2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
  • 8 GB or more of available space

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Do a backup before installing.
