Q: Is iPhoto deleted by the 10.10.3 update ?

I only just updated to Yosemite and came across this problem that all my organised photos went into one big mix, however click on view, click show sidebar and the side bar should come up. Here there should be an album called 'iPhoto events", when I expanded this all my albums re-appeared.

Go to Applications on your Mac. If you see the iPhoto icon (and possibly the Aperture icon if you have it) greyed out with a bar across, place this in the Trash. Don't delete it yet. Go to Apps Store and list your purchases. You'll need your Apple ID and PW for this. You should see iPhoto listed there with the date it was installed. You should see "Install" on button next to it. This will apply to Aperture too if you have it (having moved that to the Trash as well). Click Install. This reinstalls iPhoto and you should have access to your Library - slideshows etc - and continue to modify/add/delete etc. Once you're happy, get rid of the old version in the Trash. If this doesn't work, you can move iPhoto from Trash back to Applications. It won't work but you will only be back where you started

You are a savior!! thank you thank you thank you. Can;t believe this new photos thing *****!! Question...how do we back up now in iPhoto???

i'm not too happy with what Apple have done on this, as the the new Photos app is garbage.  We have lost the Events layout from iPhoto and it just seems to merge Photo Stream with imported photos which doesn't work for me.  Bring back iPhoto Apple! 

I'm trying some of the options above to get iPhoto back, but the concern is that it won't stay in-step with future features.

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear.  It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue.  Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

 

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.  This will change with the release of Photos 2 with El Capitan this fall.  That will allow the sorting by date or title, ascending or descending.

Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via Apple-Photos Feedback.

Thanks Old Toad, that's useful!  I've switched back to iPhoto for now. 

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it will be easy to run with iPhoto and Photos in parallel.  I've sent feedback to Apple, requesting a proper Events function in Photos.

Development of iPhoto is finished. It won’t get new features. Eventually a version of the OS will arrive that will not allow it to run.

Photos is missing some features of iPhoto - but many of those are being added back as it matures. Events are just one way to organise things, Moment are another. If you don't like Photos then you can use any other app you prefer.

iPhoto was not deleted from your hard drive, only removed from the Dock.  If you have iPhoto 9.6.1 you can still use your iPhoto library.

If you don't have that version but some earlier version of 9.x obtained from Apple via Software Update try following Terence Devlin's instructions in this post to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

 

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash.

 

Install the App from the App Store.

 

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

 

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

This helped Greatly. Now, How do I keep the iPhoto on my Dock as it was? Any Suggestions? Terminal has to remain open while using the iPhoto from finder/

as suggested below.

however if I right-click on iPhoto and show package contents, go in to Contents, and in to the MacOS folder and double click the iPhoto app from there... it launches just fine!)

I updated my macbook and when it turned back on, my iphotos was gone and all my pictures were on it.. will i get those pictures back through photos?

Gone from where? Did you look in the Applications folder?

It is true that both iPhoto and Aperture are finished and will not be updated. However Photos is a dumbed down app that is designed for people who take selfies on their iPhone - not for serious photographers. You can still use iPhoto & Aperture, just check in Preferences that one of these will be the default when you connect a camera or SD reader. If you want some good software that will be supported and updated try Affinity Photo app which is designed for Mac and works at least as well if not better than Aperture or Photoshop, and it's cheap.

Photos is for anyone using a camera to take photos. I love the way people sneer at selfies. They've been around a lot longer than "serious photographers".

Photos is optimised for people shooting and managing images across the Apple ecosystem. It's as capable an app as iPhoto, which is replaces. It's far more capable that iPhoto in a number of key ways, not least editing and management.

I'm not sure why you advertise Affinity Photo app which is a different kind of app from either iPhoto, Photos, or Aperture. And while it might be cheaper it is nowhere near as capable as Photoshop.
