How do I arrange albums by date in the new Photos app on Mac

I was wondering if anyone know if photos in the new Photos app on the Mac can be arranged by date? This feature was amazing in the iPhoto app, but for some reason I can only see the option to "Keep sorted by name".

Im running the most upto date version of OS X 10.10.3 (updated 30 mins ago)

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

My solution is different. I just do not use Photos. I also have more than 12000 Photos sorted my way and like to keep them in MY Albums. Just keep on using IpHoto, its still there and makes more sense for me until this APP is upgrade, maybe it is not for the more advanced user but the people who take just photos randomly with their iPhones(no offense here) I do that too, but if you have a large library Photos does not cut it yet

Am so annoyed and disappointed....and can't believe they left this MAJOR functionality out of this app. I have OVER 2000 Albums and Events and cannot manually sort them to the most recent date at the top. There must be somewhere out there in Apple World with a secret back door "Command R&*#P" that would help us with this problem...please help anyone!

Hi Guys,

I am also veeeery disapointed by this new app. Even the name is dumb, I mean I had to make some very VERY specific google searches to find this thread (try to google "sorting Photos albums" and good luck).

Anyways, I have 42000 + photos and TONS of iPhoto Events, now named Albums. This is ridiculous that I can't sort my albums by date !! The sorting is soooo random. For example I have made a folder for all my new year's eve albums, it's just an illogical mess...
I won't rename each album nor sort it manually ! A computer is designed to work for us !

Also I liked the automatic monthly album with photo feed. This album was a good way to keep random daily photos which doesn't go in a specific event. For example, in between to major events making two specific albums let's say a "day at the beach with friends" and the night celebrating "Tom's birthday", I took 5 or 6 random pics of something fun with my phone in the street. These 6 pics used to go in the monthly photo feed and it was great ! When I look this photo album afterwards I'd say "ho yeah I remember that" yet those random pics didn't spoil my library.

And for those saying that Moments will do the trick, it's not true. Moments are MESSY ! I can't find a sh*t in this view. Plus I don't want my random fun but not so good photos from my iPhone stands near my very high quality Reflex photos. I don't want my friends my mom or my siblings see all my photos spread on the screen like that when my computer is on. Some are personal, professional, etc...

While searching for fixes and explanations I found that to emulate those monthly albums feed: http://www.reddit.com/r/osx/comments/33e94p/missing_the_automatic_monthly_photo_ stream_albums/

Some might enjoy this technique, yet I find this is a huge step back from iPhoto

Last but not least, the feature to create FB albums from iPhoto was great. Bring it back please. This is ridiculous, I have now to create a selection of photos, export them on the finder, the post'em on FB by the browser. Come on...

I hope Apple will get his sh*t together to make a big update to fix this Asap

FWIW: Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there was a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N. Name it as desired. It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.

Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

Hi Toad,

Thank you for your quick answer but you kinda dodged the problem I talked about.

I know that Moments are the new events. I said it was stupid because you don't want your photos to be sorted like that for the many reasons I pointed out in my previous message.

I know also about that toolbar and the folder iPhoto Events. As I wanted to use the Album View, I wanted to take all my previous events out of the folder iPhoto Events (this name doesn't make sense for me) and put them in various thematic folders (which is a good organizing feature btw) such as "New Years Eves", "Snow Sports" "Travels" "Birthdays" "Family" and so on. But by doing that, the albums inside those folders are mixed up making no sense at all.. It should be a chronological ranking for god sake. This is just common sense..

Noticing that it was messy I stopped moving albums from iPhotos Event. But When I simulate and event by creating an Album and drag it in this iPhoto Events, it doesn't respect the chronological sorting either. You call that a downside, I think the word is weak to describe this major step back.

Thank you anyways for your answer and for the link to write a feedback. I already did one before posting here, but I'm gonna make a more specific one this time.

Best regards.

You have a choice of organizing albums in folders either by album title or manually. I'm not sure why you think chronological order would be preferable or even how that would work for things that most likely would intermingle many different dates & times, like your examples of Travels & Birthdays.

That's because those general folders contains multiples albums and it make more sense to have first my 24 yo birthday then my 25 yo and finally my 26 yo... Don't you think ?

Same applies for travels. I don't want my first travel ever be at the very end of the list just because it was named Venezuela...

Manual sorting is fine for people who have few events, but I have many and I have no time for this.

It should be a native basic feature.

What you said is just like saying that yout phone contacts shouldn't be sorted by alphabetical order just because some people not knowing each other will be on 2 consecutive rows. You are free to do so but this does not make any sense.
Same applies for iTunes : we can rank our songs the way we want. The same should be possible on Photos

So why not just title the albums so they sort in that way? That's what I do. I have a "Birthdays" folder, & in that there are folders for each person who I have a lot of birthday photos for. In those folders the albums are titled with leading numbers for years. I do something similar in my Holidays folder, although for that one there are no subfolders, just albums titled with the holiday name (like Xmas or Easter) followed by a year number, so all the holidays of the same name are grouped together. For me, that is better than a strictly chronological order because that is the way I like to see them.

For similar reasons, my travel folder is grouped alphabetically by place names, not chronologically, again because I am not as interested in when I was there as how many places I visited & how many times I went there.

Since not everybody wants a chronological organization for everything, I think the flexibility of title naming plus folder/subfolder organization is adequate. Of course, YMMV so do let Apple know what you want using the form at https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html. If enough other users make the same request, there is a good chance Apple will add it to a future update of the app.

Well You are lucky that Apple chose the sorting method that was convenient for you, and I am happy for you, but since my hundreds of albums are not named with leading numbers nor named with standardized titles, and since iPhoto used to sort them chronologically in the first place -like every other photo library manager software ever- I get used to do so, and I don't want to change and spend 5 hours renaming every single album...

If i had to rename every album, I'd just used the finder and some folders with alphanumerical names like "YYYY-MM-DD - Place - NameOfAlbum" which I don't want I a decent library. A library i meant to organize your photos the way you want, quickly, in an efficient way, using metadatas to work for you. This is why photo library softwares were invented in the first place.

It's a pity we have to beg to have some basic functionnality back.

Kind regards

If you dislike Photos that much you can continue to use iPhoto. There are several discussions posted to this forum every day explaining how to do that, but the short version is OS X 10.10.3 supports iPhotos version 9.6.1 quite well. If you have an older version, see the user tip, Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS X 10.10.3 by Barney-15E for how to get it.
