Q: yosemite 10.10.3 upgrade now can't boot up with kernal panic

Hi

I updated today with the new release. Unfortunately when i retuned to my mac if was off! Then restarted but as soon as i click my user icon a load of text comes down the right upper corner including words kernel panic. I've booted in safe mode and i can see new photos app etc in dock. I've copied the error message the system sent to apple. Help-i can't boot unless I'm in safe mode….

That happened to me to. When you power up, look closely at the screen, you will see it turn on. Then hold down the shift key until you see the apple logo. Good luck!

I just read up that because I have a firmware password on the **** machine (I set it day 1 of opening it from Apple) I cannot run safe mode without logging in and turning it off.. even if I could do that I forgot the stupid thing

Looks like I'm going to have down time until I can get to an Apple store ..

So you can't have access to the machine? Just browse the hard disk via firewire... ? A USB key...
As Miai suggest:

Just finally got back on.. With me having a firmware password on the machine it was locking me out away from pretty much every option. Somehow I guessed the password miraculosly (after a year and a half of guessing) - the installation of the update continued once I managed to log back in via safe mode. Weirdly the screen was doing some weird flickering animation during the installation.. it all seems a little screwed to be honest, I used to have manycam installed but there's no instances of it left anymore, so it must have been something else but similar.

First of all, may be you must attach a usb keyboard directly to your mac not via hub (if you have a Mac Pro for example), than you will access in safe mode, just press as soon you hear the sound or try to measure the time you wait before see the screen lamp and can count 12345... press it.
If you have way to browse your hard disk, via usb keyboard or from another machine, just delete one file as Miai suggest:

...and delete this file (which might be the same, although it has a different name), you can find it in Library/Extensions.
