Apr 8, 2015 1:00 PM in response to manydrumsby BobHarris,Please post the EtreCheck output
<https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6174>
It is unwise to run most of the Mac cleaners available as they then do cause more problems then they solve.
Also Anti-Malware products then to slow down Macs and sometimes cause kernel panics.
It is possible you just need more RAM.
Also please describe your typical usage and what you are doing when the performance is slow. -

It is slow in general. I download tv episodes only occasionally but other than that it is used for browsing and word processing-
I have 2GB of memory in 2 separate slots and 250 of storage (of which only half is used).

Apr 8, 2015 1:18 PM in response to manydrumsby BobHarris,I would still like to actually see what EtreCheck reports. Please download the EtreCheck program from the link I provided and launch it then copy and paste the output to a reply in this message thread.
Is very light these days, for Yosemite. That in itself could be the problem (if you decide to get more RAM, Crucial.com and MacSales.com (OWC) are well recommended)
But looking at the EtreCheck output may identify 3rd party additions that may be slowing down your system, which is why we would like to see it. It will also identify what Mac you are running, and other configuration information that can help identify issues.
And while you are collecting information, you also might look at the Applications -> Utilities -> Console output and see if there are any frequently repeating entries that might indicate a program that is failing and constantly being restarted (perhaps because it is not compatible with Yosemite).

Apr 8, 2015 1:57 PM in response to manydrumsby ChitlinsCC,According to https://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/, the MINIMUM System Requirements are:
. Check your Mac hardware.
To get details about your Mac model, click the Apple icon at the top left of your screen, choose About This Mac, then choose More Info.
POST the MORE INFO is easier than EtreCheck for this purpose
These Mac models are compatible with OS X Yosemite:
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)With MINIMUM TWO(2) GB RAM
Methinks you have maxed out your RAM usage with the OSX if you mean you have 2GB RAM TOTAL (not 4GB, 2GB in each slot)
I have read here many times that 4GB is the REAL Minimum & 8GB is recommended
What happens when you run both a browser and WP app at once, switching between?
One at a time?

Apr 9, 2015 6:54 AM in response to manydrumsby Barry Hemphill,I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but "eigt years old" is well into the obsolescense/obsolete range. The technology is several light years beyond that place in time.

Apr 9, 2015 8:18 AM in response to manydrumsby babowa,I would absolutely not recommend downloading/installing any "clean" ,"speed up" or otherwise "mess with your OS" software. Additionally, Mac OS does not need "defragging" as it does that quite nicely. Such software will usually alter or delete needed system components and you may wind up with a "bricked" Mac.
In order to help more specifically, we would need your model/year, how much RAM, and how much empty space on your hard drive. Even if you have all of those in an "ideal" condition, keep in mind that you have a very outdated processor/graphics card running the latest OS which will never result in an optimal experience.

Apr 9, 2015 9:26 AM in response to manydrumsby ChitlinsCC,DO NOT CLICK THE LINK PROVIDED BY thomas.painebg = LIKELY A MALWARE SITE
YOU DO NOT NEED OR WANT A CLEANER APP - YOU HAVE TOO LITTLE RAM

Apr 9, 2015 10:10 AM in response to ChitlinsCCby ChitlinsCC,I am a bit skittish here of late as many of these kinds of posts are indeed deemed SPAM (or whatever) by our Hosts and removed without fanfare (along with similar warnings posted by upper status folk).
Although this MAY be a non-malicious site & app, many of the other places that one can get the app are known for their lack of safety
You still do not need or want a cleaner app

Apr 9, 2015 11:00 AM in response to Lawrence Finchby manydrums,Thank you for you help. I will not be following any links or using any apps- I realize too little ram is the issue- not to mention an outdated macbook.

Apr 9, 2015 11:05 AM in response to Lawrence Finchby babowa,It appears to actually be a legit site with a software to sell - albeit not cheap. The value of running such software is another matter.

Apr 9, 2015 11:06 AM in response to manydrumsby Lawrence Finch,Of all the links posted the one to the Etrecheck User Tip (Using EtreCheck) is legitimate. This is a program written by a highly respected member of the Apple Support Communities. It's free, and it analyzes the contents of your Mac to look for things that might improve its performance or resolve problems. It's non-invasive, and doesn't change anything on your Mac.

I am making the assumption that you mean the thread to which I referred -
