Convert iPhoto Events to Photos Albums

I just installed Photos on my iMac. I have taken a LOT of time making Events in iPhoto. Is there a way for me to convert the Events I made with iPhoto into Albums for the new Apple Photos software? It would take me a LONG time to make new Albums and then copy all the Event images into the New Albums.

Is there a way to automate this?

I had the same problem. There is a quick and easy fix. Go to My Albums section and then go into the album "iPhoto Events" and then hit Command + A (Select All) that will highlight all the events. Then right click and click on move events out of "iPhoto Events". Once you do this, all your events will be individual albums listed in the album section. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Hmmm...I'm not convinced! I'm all for integration across devices but Photos is a good example of where they designed it for the iOS device and have now pushed it onto the OS X platform. What was wrong with iPhoto on iOS in the first place I have no idea...it seems like change for change sake.

iMovie is another example - version 9 was great - simple to use, easy to organise...then they re-developed it for iOS and again pushed it to OS X, dumbing it down. It's now a nightmare to use and organise your home movies and not at all intuitive.

What's next?

I agree with these comments. We were all "guided" by Apple in the original Tutorial... Import your images and create an Event... now they pretty much burry it and take away all the functionality. Have to make an album then most it to event then can not sort by date. RIDICULOUS!

I also agree with the comment that we THE CUSTOMERS... THE USERS... post these comments to Apple with absolutely no response. They have no intention of actually ever listening to us.

Don't get me wrong most of the time I love updates but when I see change for the sake of change I just think some exec is trying to make themselves look valuable.

Based on what? We've seen modifications to systems and other apps based on user input before. There's no rational to that statement. Of course there has to be enough user interest to warrant the effort to make modifications.

And you have to realize that is is only Version 1 of Photos and it's still in development.

You need to read the the articles that describe what this forum is and for. Apple are not here. This is users talking to other users, this is not how Apple communicates with its customers. So, you're correct to say that Apple don't respond here. But then you were told that when you signed up, so why did you expect them to?

That is in iPhoto. It still is in iPhoto. Photos is an entirely different app with different capabilities and ambitions. Amusingly, as some one using iPhoto back in 2007 when iPhoto 08 came out, I remember all the folks complaining about Events and how they were much less flexible than the Camera Roll concept that preceded them for the first 6 version of the App.

but when I see change for the sake of change I just think some exec is trying to make themselves look valuable.

It's change reflecting the fact that the market demand is for cloud based services that allow interoperability between multiple devices. That's the point of Photos. That was not possible with iPhoto. That's a reflection of the fact that there are far more people with iPhones than with Macs now, and more and more people who have multiple devices. So, rather than an executive trying to do something, it's more a case of someone who doesn't understand it's a different app for a different purpose.

May well be, but even now, Photos on the Mac is a more capable app than Photos on iOS. Faces, for instance?

Until you realise that iPhoto on iOS and iPhoto on the Mac had no way whatever to communicate with each other. The only thing they shared was a name.

Version 9 was great, but there a lot of folks around these part who will swear that 9 was a mere fraud compared to v6HD... For me, I sat down with a Windows user last week and in an hour got her with iMovie installed and working on her iPad and shooting and editing on a Mac. One hour. Not a big iMovie user but I was impressed by that.

Thanks to everybody who has written on this topic. Thankfully, I have yet to migrate everything to Photos. My iPhoto has over 2,000 events so I am moving slowly. However, I need to get a new mac and want to do a clean install so am trying to figure out how to do this with my iPhoto library of over 40k photos.

1) Do I move my iPhoto library as is onto an external drive using this article http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/01/25/how-to-safely-move-your-macs-iphoto-li brary-onto-an-external-drive ?

2) Do I upload it to icloud drive which I think automatically means that it all migrates to photos?

3) Do I buy Lightroom? I have no idea how this works and how my events would be handled.

If I do #1, will I be able to transfer the iphoto library onto a new computer or will it force me to use photos?

Thank you so much for your advice. I really appreciate it.

I am directing my question to you because I have always had good luck following your advice/instructions. Have been reading so much about iPhoto to Photos; find it all confusing and a headache. My iPhoto Library was converted to Photos when I upgraded. I am currently running iMac OSX 10.10.3. Under the Albums heading in Photos, I see the Album titled iPhoto Events. I assume all my Events reside there.

My question: Exactly what steps should I take to convert the iPhotos Events Album to individual Photos Albums? In this thread, Kieran writes: . . . .Go to My Albums and then go into the album "iPhoto Events" and then hit Command+A (Select All). That will highlight all the events. Then right click and click on move events out of iPhoto Events. Once you do this, all your events will be individual albums listed in the album section."

Will this be the best (easiest) way to accomplish the conversion? I'm not so much concerned about retaining chronology as I am about keeping all the photos in an iPhoto Event together. Kieran's directions seem clear and certainly would do what I want.

I would appreciate your take on this. I am sitting in limbo with this Photos thing until I understand what to do.

No conversion is needed - each event is a separate album in Photos and the separate albums are in a folder named iPhoto Events for organization - you can more any or all of them out of the folder to the main album list or to other folders as you choose - if you open the folder you will see all of you albums matching your iPhoto events

I actually, at one point, deleted that "iPhoto Events" folder that contained all my former Events that I had in my former iPhoto . ( I had no Albums in my former iPhoto), BUT that was only after I had created a separate Album for each of those Events. I guess, to enhance and speed things up you could "Then right click and click on move events out of iPhoto Events" as Lee Miles says, and that would create individual albums. I created an Album by copy/paste method , by creating a New Album, and naming it Exactly as the Event. I probably had 150 Albums that I had to do that to, so if you had an extremely large number of Events, that Command "A" method, sounds like it would cut the mustard. The reason that I deleted that iPhoto Events folder (or Album) on my iMac Photos was that I was getting confused by having an Event and an Album with the same name appear on my iPhone after syncing, and of course on my iMac Photos App. That was I didn't have any duplicates. By the way, again the long way, I just copied and pasted all the photos that were in my previous individual Events to that same name Album to complete the process of creating individual Albums. If you do decide to Delete the iPhoto Events Album that appears in your Photo's App, obviously make sure that you have created those individual albums.

I am in the process of helping out my wife now, who didn't update the to the last iPhoto update before the conversion, and therefore, she didn't have any iPhoto App left on her OS on Mac left, because of that: Only the Photos app. I am now making individual Albums of her previous Events, one by one by the method mentioned here. Hopefully I have answered a few questions, but of course, I might have created a few more to be answered. Keep at it, and good luck.

Lol, obviously not overly familiar with Windows either. Old Toad's point is simple. If you wish to try and maintain Events as an organising paradigm, then you have to bend Photos to work that way because it's designed to work a different way. Alternative options include: learning Photos way, keep using iPhoto or use some other app that works in a way you prefer.

Aug 11, 2015 11:42 PM in response to Stoker

this thread is about converting iPhoto events to albums in Photos - you can not possibly do that now since you deleted the albums that were automatically converted

This is a useful thread, so I'll add my question to it. If I don't get any answers I'll consider it buried in the past and open a new thread.

I first opened and tried to use Photos when it was still beta. I realised that a lot of useful features that I took for granted on iPhoto were missing. So I closed down Photos and moved back to iPhoto.

I know that iPhoto will soon become obsolete, so the sooner I get used to Photos the better, but I want to be preprared.

Questions:

1) I was pleased to read that the Events can be converted into 'albums' so as to work better with the Photos scheme. However, I was disappointed that these cannot be sorted by date. If I were to insert a date prefix in the event names (e.g. 15-09-13 for today, or just 15-09), would that solve the problem?

2) When I first looked at Photos, there was no batch change function. This was a surprising omission. Is there one now?

3) Again, when I tried it as a beta, the 'Moments' was a mess. My photos were divided up, sort of, according to date, but there were so many errors that it was unworkable. No point in having the feature, really. Has this been fixed? Might it have been something to do with the way that I have organised my iPhoto pictures, that I can perhaps fix before conversion?

Thanks.

I have a question about the former Albums in iPhoto. In addition to all the events, on the right sidebar I had a number of albums. For instance, I make greeting cards out of my images and I had over 100 saved in a album called Cards. They are also scattered all over the place in events. What happens to all those albums as one transitions from iPhoto to Photos? I ordered a new iMac and will need to migrate everything to Photos. I'm worried I will lose all the info in these formerly named Albums. Trying to round them all up would be a real pain.

Sep 17, 2015 10:34 PM in response to Old Toad

Thanks so much for your reply, OT.

>The photos will be distributed into various Moments based on their EXIF creation date. So they only will be grouped in the Cards album that should have been carried over from the iPhoto library.<

I'm not sure I understand the above. If they come over intact as an album (or moment or whatever they want to call them) then that is great. But these cards were created over the span of about 3-4 years. Their originals are scattered all over in various events.

The other issue is that my iMac died. I am temporarily using a Macbook Pro until my new iMac arrives. For reasons I do not understand, this laptop will not open my iPhoto Library. My iPhoto app is on the laptop's HD, but all the images, the iPhoto Library itself, is on an Ext. HD. I don't know why it won't open it. I have the same OS on both (Mavericks) and had the same iPhoto version, which has now been updated to ver. 9.5.1. It's a big mess. I was just hoping that with Yosemite and the new Photos, it would straighten itself out. I sure don't want to lose all those images... almost 450gbs worth.

Thanks again. I'll wait until i get my new iMac and hopefully it will sort itself out.
