battery icon has an x through it and computer doesn't work unless plugged into an outlet

My computer is only working when it is plugged into an outlet. There is an x running through the battery icon. Also, all of the programs run slower than usual. Is his a battery issue or a hardware or software issue?

MacBook Pro, iOS 8.1.3, Computer is running much slower
