Q: battery icon has an x through it and computer doesn't work unless plugged into an outlet

My computer is only working when it is plugged into an outlet. There is an x running through the battery icon. Also, all of the programs run slower than usual. Is his a battery issue or a hardware or software issue?

MacBook Pro, iOS 8.1.3, Computer is running much slower

How old and how many charge cycles does your battery have?

As I don't know which OS version you have (you are not running iOS), I'll give instructions for Yosemite: Go to the menubar > Apple > About this Mac > System Report > Hardware > power and copy the battery information including cycle count, etc.

I guess from this information that it must be a battery issue. Yes?

It appears to be a battery issue:

    there is no charge remaining

there is no full charge capacity showing

there is no cycle count information, and

it shows as no battery installed

I would remove it immediately and make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar.
