bluetooth unavailable since 10.10.3 update

Since I updated my 2013 iMac 21.5" to OS 10.10.3, Bluetooth does not work anymore. I can't use my wireless keyboard and trackpad. There is no longer a Bluetooth menu in the Sytem Preferences, and the message in the Network menu is: 'Bluetooth unavailable'. Rebooting didn't help.

I did have the same problem, the bluetooth was not available and could not be seen in system pref / top bar. This occurred after I changed the batteries for my keyboard.

This solved the problem for me (10.10.5):

- shut down (not restart)

- all usb devices out from ports (http://www.techrepublic.com/article/pro-tip-how-to-troubleshoot-bluetooth-issues -in-os-x-yosemite/)

- start and reset the PRAM holding Cmd+Option+P+R. Although I did not get the two beeps though so cannot be sure if resetted.

- on startup imac started to seek for Bluetooth devices and found the keyboard

Interesting thing was, as this problem occurred, also an image of eject appeared on my top bar

I was having the same problems with my 2015 iMac - resetting the SMC didn't work and resetting the NVRAM/PRAM didn't work. Taking these steps and rebooting did force the system to correct itself, and now the Bluetooth is working correctly:

  • Delete com.apple.Bluetooth.plist from /Library/Preferences
  • Delete files named com.apple.Bluetooth.somehexuuidstuff.plist from ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost (note that this is the user preference folder, not the system one)
  • Reboot!

Sometime after I updated my late-2014 27" iMac with Retina Display to 10.10.3, I noticed both my Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple Magic Trackpad were very "sluggish". I then noticed the squiggly line through the Bluetooth icon. I searched and found this thread and performed an SMC reset without success. I then tried the NVRAM reset by holding down Command, Option, P, and R at bootup until I got a second startup chime. That fixed it.

As a side note, I switch from PCs to Macs in 2008 and have owned several iMacs and MacBooks since then. 7 years ago, everything was rock solid, but the last few years I seem to be having more and more little problems like this - mostly software related. It's like Apple is losing touch with their former self and is trying to rush out products too soon and/or trying to add too many features without enough testing. While still far better than the competition, Apple seems to be falling victim to popularity the last few years - at least from my perspective.

I've also experienced this issue where none of my bluetooth devices will connect to my Macbook Pro after the 10.10.3 updated. I read on another post (can't find the url) that if you shutdown, disconnect all USB devices, wait 2 minutes and reboot then bluetooth will connect again. I followed the steps and like magic bluetooth was working again. However, the same problem happened again this morning, so I had to go through the steps again.

I'll try some of the more exhaustive steps from this thread the next time this happens.
