Q: bluetooth unavailable since 10.10.3 update

Since I updated my 2013 iMac 21.5" to OS 10.10.3, Bluetooth does not work anymore. I can't use my wireless keyboard and trackpad. There is no longer a Bluetooth menu in the Sytem Preferences, and the message in the Network menu is: 'Bluetooth unavailable'. Rebooting didn't help.

This solved the issue of bluetooth functionality being non-existent on my macbook pro's desktop (post OS X 10.10.3 update). Although I did not see the first file you said to remove from Library/Preference file, but did find find the second one and deleted it, restarted, and presto-bluetooth was back in its place in systems preferences window.

Thanks Ron! I now am able to use my apple mouse and keypad!

I updated my OS X to 10.10.5 and my bluetooth now: not available.

    I tried:

    1.Delete com.apple.Bluetooth.plist from /Library/Preferences

Delete files named com.apple.Bluetooth.somehexuuidstuff.plist from ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost (note that this is the user preference folder, not the system one)

    Reboot!

    2. Rebooted with command+R pressed. Then chose 'Reinstall OS X'.

    3. Reset PRAM at reboot time. Press and hold ALT + CMD + R + P until you hear two chimes at reboot.

4.Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

On Mac Pro, iMac, Mac mini, and XserveTo reset the SMC on Intel-based Mac Pro, iMac, and Mac mini computers, as well as Xserve:

    Shut down the computer.

    Unplug the power cord.

    Wait fifteen seconds.

    Attach the power cord.

Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

    None of the above worked.

    Any solution suggestions?

I have had a similar problem when our cable ISP went down and I wanted to use my iPhone 3GS (IOS 6.1.6) to 'tether’, so I could have some kind of internet access on my MacBook.  System Preferences/Bluetooth would not pick up my iPhone, and my iPhone couldn't 'see' my MacBook Pro in the Bluetooth setting panel either.  I followed the 'Reset PRAM' procedure as above, and it was then possible for my MacBook and iPhone to see each other.  Although I was invited to pair, the paring lasted only a second or two.  I get a message on the iPhone “Connection not supported”, or "Connection Unsuccessful".  However, when I went to the System Preferences / Network panel on the MacBook and selected “Bluetooth PAN”, I got a button inviting me to connect to my iPhone.  This worked. (Obviously I had turned on both Bluetooth and Personal Hotspot on the phone.)  And finally I’m pleased to say I got a working internet connection.  Puzzlingly, the Bluetooth panel then showsed a successful connection, as did the iPhone.  [Ironically, by the time I had done all this, our ISP had restored the cable broadband connection, but it has been a useful learning experience).

Thanks to all you contributors for pointing me in the right direction.  I hope volare2015 got things running too.

Further to my post of Sep 20, when I tried to reconnect via Bluetooth PAN a day later (ISP failed again!), the procedure I described above did not work.  After ISP service restored there was an OS X update to 10.10.5.  Still Bluetooth PAN did not work, even after resetting PRAM as described.  Then I tried powering off my iPhone 3GS and restarting it, and then Bluetooth PAN worked as I described.  So it isn't easy to tell if all the steps described by volare2015 are necessary, but re-booting the iPhone should be added to that list.

BTW I have not managed to get tethering via USB cable to work on either occasion.  Network Preferences says "Either the cable is unplugged or the device at the other end is not responding".  Since iTunes can "see" my iPhone via the USB cable it must be a fault in iPhone 3GS (IOS 6.1.6).  Maybe newer iPhones work better??

I was having this issue to.  I just did what you suggested.   Mine only said Bluetooth.   it didn't have all that other stuff in the file name.  But it worked.  thanks for posting this info.  Really helpful.  I just bought the NEW WIRELESS KEYBOARD & MOUSE that have the lightening connection usb just the other day and it went out today.  it happened after I turned off beats from the top bar.  and i turned off Windows Parrelle from starting up at start up. After i made those two changes my bluetooth stopped working and i noticed it said BLUETOOTH UNAVAILABLE .

    1.  There was only 1 Bluetooth File in the Library / Preferences on my MBPR
