Migration of iPhoto failed - not enough free space

Hi,

I have an issue with the wizard that makes the iPhoto library compatible with Photos.

My Library is hosted on my Synology NAS with 200Go of free space and my Library is abut 40Go.

When I select my library at the Photo application start-up, it recognizes it and start the migration process.

However it stops at 8% with an error message "Not enough free space - you should free about 230Go" (something like that).

I really don't understand since from the beginning I read everywhere that no more hdd space were required...

So if someone has an idea of what's going on...

Thanks

Fabian

Hi Terence,

Thanks for your input. However my library has always worked correctly of the NAS so I don't know why it wouldn't work.

But you're right, I did a copy of the library that I put on my MacBook SSD and started iPhotos (to check the integrity of the library).

Then close iPhoto and started Photos. I did select the local library and the same process again. Still crashing at 8% with the same error message...

You've been very lucky that the library worked on a NAS. Apple have been warning against it for years. For instance:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168

Note the comment:

“Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”

I'm afraid 's likely that the Library s been damaged from being on the NAS. Try repair it:

Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

If that fails:

Option 2

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
