Spinning beach ball when quitting Logic and loading projects

Hello,

Whenever I load a Logic project I get the spinning beach ball. After a while, the project is loaded and it all works, but it is taken way too long to load the plugins. I'm not even talking about big projects, and I have an SSD, so it should be much faster.

The same happens when I quit Logic. Not when I close the project, but when I actually quit Logic. The "Logic Pro" menu in the top left corner of the menu bar in OS X would light up in dark blue when I press CMD + Q, and it would stay like this for 30 seconds or so. The spinning beach ball would appear again during this time. Then it would finally quit.

I have reinstalled OS X and reinstalled Logic Pro X. But the problem was still there. It sounds like a core audio problem, but the problem occurs no matter what my sound output is set to. It happened when the audio output was set to the built-in speakers of my Mac Pro (yes Mac Pro have that!), when it was set to the speakers of the Cinema Display (LED one) and when it was set to my RME Babyface.

I don't think it's a Driver problem because it happened as well when I reinstalled OS X and Logic, and when I tested it on the Macs/Cinema Displays speakers, without the RME Babyface, basically without having installed any drivers or anything yet. So everything was fresh and untouched.

This is a very weird issue. I'm wondering if someone knows what I could do next.

My specs:

Mid 2010 Mac Pro 12-core 2,92 GHz

32 GB RAM

27" LED Cinema Display

OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks

Logic Pro 10.1.1

Thanks a lot 🙂

This sounds like it could be a plugin issue..

Maybe a 3rd party plugin thats causing a problem or... maybe you have used something to 'wrap' plugins such as Automap or 32lives?

Or.. you have an errant driver installed that is interfering /conflicting with launch... (Usually it will be a Digidesign/Avid driver installed because of the use of Protools on the same system)

Try the following....

First, delete Logic's prefs... and delete the CS file too...

Delete the user preferences

You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:

  1. Quit Logic Pro
  2. In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
  3. Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
  4. Press the Go button.
  5. Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
  6. If you have upgraded from an earlier version of Logic Pro, you should also remove ~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.
  7. Restart the computer.

Note: If you cannot find any of the files mentioned in this tip,you didn't follow the instructions exactly as written 🙂

Now test and see if that resolves the issue...

If not....

Quit Logic Pro X

Hold down Shift and Control and while doing so launch Logic Pro X and see if that resolves matters..

If it does not then...

Hold down control only and launch Logic Pro X...

Again see if that resolves matters and if it doesn't..

Finally.. hold down Option and Launch Logic Pro X...

If any of these works.. let us know as that will provide us with the possible cause of your issue...

If none of these basic troubleshooting steps work.. please do the following..

Download Etrecheck from here...

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

..and then launch Logic Pro (but don't load a project)

Now run Etrecheck and post up the full report here....

Thanks...

Nigel

Hi,

thanks for your reply.

Like I said, this is a complete fresh install – I installed OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 from a USB installer, and re-downloaded Logic Pro X from the App Store. That's all. That means there's no 3rd party plugins, no 3rd party drivers, nothing, just the stock OS X system. 🙂

However, I just installed the RME Babyface drivers. But this makes no difference, as the problem was present before as well. I'm just saying that, because it appears in my EtreCheck Report which I will post an the end of this message, so you may be wondering.

I tried to delete the preference files and such before – no change. 😟

Logic started normally (= no message or appeared or anything) while holding down Shift + Control, and also while holding down the Option key. The issue is still there. What would or what should it do if I hold these keys while starting? When I hold only the Control key however, it asked me if I wanted to start Logic without the Core Audio. I clicked to start without it, and then obviously everything worked.

So here's my EtreCheck report. Everything looks normal I'd say?

Okay, apparently there *is* a little problem. This part here:

Problem System Launch Agents: ℹ️

[failed] com.apple.uhfu.ledcinemadisplayaudio.plist

I believed this was normal because my audio output was set to the external USB audio interface when I ran the test, but I ran it again with the sound output set to the Cinema Display, and this message still appeared. When I click the Information symbol, it says:

These are low-level parts of your operating system, usually provided by Apple, that run in the background while a user is logged in. Any failure that appears here may indicate a problem with your system.

I can't tell if there's a link to my Logic problem, however.

PS: I just remembered that I installed a system update for the LED Cinema Display which I downloaded from the Apple Support page. Maybe it has to do with that. It may have been an old update that was not needed.

Apr 9, 2015 8:29 AM in response to The Art Of Sound

Okay, so I deleted this file and ran the test again – it's gone now and doesn't appear in the test anymore. It didn't recreate itself either. I suppose it is just from this Cinema Display update that I installed. So it's unrelated to the issue I guess.

I checked if the issue was still present in Logic, and sadly it is. I did a SMC reset and a PRAM reset, it didn't help. I feel like this problem will never be solved 😟
And I don't even know if it's a software or hardware problem… it's just terrible.

Apr 9, 2015 9:48 AM in response to Anon M

Given this occurred then It looks like its an issue with the RME drivers.... which would be unusual given RME's normal level of driver quality and stability, and you are running the latest ones so, Im a little perplexed as to what your issue could be..

Your etrecheck report looks very clean (once you had removed the failed driver)... but there is one thing I noticed..

You have a generic USB UDisk installed... Is that your Samsung or is your SSD maounted internally?

If its another disk externally mounted, try unplugging it from your system.. restart your mac and test again.. as some generics can lead to odd drive access issues... which is what might be happening causing the beachball on disk access...

Apr 9, 2015 9:57 AM in response to The Art Of Sound

Well, I had tested Logic as soon as my fresh install of Mavericks was done, meaning before I even installed RME drivers, and the problem was still there, so it can't be the RME drivers I think.

Just imagine you bought a new Mac, and the first thing you did was to download Logic Pro. That's as far as I got, and that's where the problem was already present.

I later added the RME drivers. Because that core audio issue could look like a problem with the Mac's internal sound card. But it later occurred with the Babyface too, so I'm kind of confused. It's hard to troubleshoot this. 😟

As for the USB UDisk, it was a USB flash drive, I've removed it now, but no difference of course!

Apr 9, 2015 10:15 AM in response to Anon M

Just imagine you bought a new Mac,

Well, your Mac isn't exactly new....... it's a five year old model that was designed to run under SL...not that it should have any effect on this problem but... many people reported issues with older Mac Pros when used under Mavericks.. mainly due to graphics driver problems leading to poor performance.... and some very strange issues that were never fully resolved until Yosemite (and even then.. some still continue to have such issues... but to a lesser degree)

So... given you have little to lose at this point.. Try updating the OS to Yosemite and then test out LPX under that OS...

Apr 9, 2015 10:15 AM in response to The Art Of Sound

Hmm, do you believe there could be a link between the GPU and this problem with Logic?

Because I'm receiving an error in the Apple Hardware Test. It says something about a Temperature Sensor Error in the PCIe bay. Sounds like the graphics card to me. Sometimes I get weird grey stripes over the screen, very quickly, but that's also very rare. I thought the card may be damaged. The PCIe port was checked and it's okay. I bought the Mac from a seller last year, so I still have warranty. Trying to sort this all out as soon as possible.

Some people have told me it may just be that the sensors are not recognized by the Mac. That's very possible. I wouldn't know why grey stripes appear then because that's a sign that a graphic card is failing. But it could also be the Cinema Display, it's so hard to troubleshoot all of this.

I have a warranty on the card as well, already sent an email to the company to send it back. But I'll try out Yosemite then I guess. I really don't like Yosemite and don't plan on keeping it to be honest. 😟 I would go as far as saying it would suck if that would resolve the issue haha!

Thanks for your help so far. 😉

Grey bars are a typical symptom of a Graphics Card issue.... that can be caused by over heating or a faulty component on the card... Im not sure why this would cause the issue you are having with Logic... but hey, anything is possible.... given the history of GC driver/card issues and the recent OS X versions...

Thanks for your help so far.

You are more than welcome...

..and as for your comments about Yosemite, like yourself Im not a huge fan of it either.. but I have to admit that on my testbed 2015 Mac Pro which has to run Yosemite due to a lack of hardware support in prior OS X versions.. Im having no real issues other than the general LPX bugs that have been confirmed by others. LPX performance is stable and snappy... when used with stable Yosemite compatible Audio device drivers.. so Im warming to it.. very slowly 🙂

I don't see me switching over full time from my very stable SL and LP9 work rig to the Mac Pro / Yosemite / LPX rig just yet... but eventually I'm sure Ill have to, because of the need for full compatibility with 3rd party plugins... like Kontakt, and it's 3rd parry libs.. which I use extensively...

I am still dreading the day i have to do that because I am so comfortable with my current working setup... but maybe with a little less dread than I did initially!

Time wil tell!

Cheers..

It's funny because I was talking to someone today, about 3rd party plugins, and updates, and actually, we came to the conclusion that good music is being made today, and was being made yesterday, and 3 years ago, and 10 years ago, just like 30 years ago or 300 years ago 🙂 So there's no reason we can't make good music with todays gear tomorrow!

I think our society is in some kind of update-crazyness, wether it's on mobile phones or computers. I always had to have the latest, but I manages to get out of this – life is better. 🙂

And I don't want Apple to tell me what stuff I have to install and which apps I use or how I work.

If I ever really really really have to install Yosemite, it will be on a different partition.

Apple *will* get rid of the bugs in Yosemite, but it's also all some kind of publicity stunt. Today, every app has bugs, so it doesn't matter if yours has some as well. But on the other hand, it's good publicity. All those updates I get every day on my iPhone, with the line "minor enhancements" … I'm pretty sure that's some kind of publicity too, to remind you "Hey, I'm that app you downloaded some time ago, remember? Come and open me again" 😉

But we will see when I install Yosemite. I don't think it has to do with it because I had the issue with 10.9.4 as well, but shortly before - that is, before I installed my new SSD and made a fresh install - also on 10.9.4 - I didn't have this.

Well, at least I'll be able to try out Yosemite. 😝 Since I've heavily disliked iOS 7 back then, and still do, I can already guess what I'll be thinking of it haha!

Apr 9, 2015 11:57 AM in response to Anon M

I totally get what you are saying....

As many of us have discussed, here and elsewhere...

The 'enforced' obsolescence of both hardware and software is something most of us strongly disagree with but seems to be the 'way of the world' these days unfortunately....

I would stick with my current working rig for time immemorial , if I could... but sadly, I already know that will not be possible in the long term.. Eventually the hardware I am currently running my working rig on.. will break down and become unrepairable... (or maybe at least not in any viable way) snd so i will have to upgrade.. as newer hardware requires the use of newer OS's... to support the hardware.

I continued to use my trusty Atari ST1040 with Creator/Notator for many years... well past it's 'sell by date'... until obtaining spare parts for the Atari proved difficult and repairing the increasing number of small failures..became way too expensive to maintain... and so I moved over to the Macs and Logic... I really didn't want to.. but I had to.... if only from a financial perspective.

I've got two extra 2011 iMacs (That I picked up cheap recently) in storage so if/when my current iMac fails... and cannot be repaired at a reasonable cost.. I have two backup systems ready to go.. so for at least the next few years I'll be able to keep my current rig/software/hardware combo up and running..

However, there are some newer Kontakt libs and plugins.. that I really do enjoy and i cannot use them with my SL/LP9 rig... as they need a later version of OS X/ Kontakt... to run so I bought a new Mac Pro (Mainly for other purposes such as supporting my clients who are running Yosemite and LPX but what the heck 🙂 ) and using the excellent and "I don't know what i would do without it" VEP, I can install them on the Mac Pro and use them in LP9 on my SL rig without issue... so I get the best of both worlds at this time.

I know though that it will only be maybe 5-10 years and Ill have to switch over to the newer hardware as by then, as was with the Ataris... It just wont be practical or viable to keep maintaining the older iMacs any longer...

Ah well..

I intend to make the most of this 'Golden Time" while I still can! 🙂

Cheers

I like this post!

I've stuck with Snow Leopard and Logic 9 on an early 2010 Mac Pro, it's fantastically solid and fast. I upped the memory to 16GB a couple of weeks ago as I'm starting to use more East-West Gold Symphonic for a new project. personally I feel Apple's constant upgrade scheme is a bit of a scam, same with the plugin manufacturers... many of the new features could be provided on existing plug-ins rather than having to upgrade. Rarely are new features not possible on existing software/hardware. Right now all my plugins work, I can play back 40 audio tracks while recording eight more... (try that under Yosemite, on ANY machine).

Yes, Yosemite will have it's bugs worked out, just in time for the next big OS upgrade in which new bugs will appear and Logic will perform miserably until the release of a few OS/application upgrades.... then the cycle repeats over again.

Apr 9, 2015 3:15 PM in response to Pancenter

Addendum:

Apple has many new users with the Garageband/Logic upgrade path, most of these users are beginners/amateurs who will never use the audio recording features.. most use loops or preprogrammed MIDI, not all of course, but most. All one has to do is look at the posts on this forum to see where Logic is headed... I see more automatic sequence creation and preprogrammed loops as Logic moves away from the recorded musician to the automated music loops based slicer/dicer. (not that one can't be creative in this field, it's just different).

The time consuming process of creating your own customized drum track, placing every hit, adding nuance, adjusting velocity to get a certain feel is already a lost art, as is the patience learned by doing so. Same with recording live musicians, I see Logic moving away from that kind of production.
