iMac (late 2009) CPU runs very slow (about half speed)

After having had troubles with performance I 've recently discovered, that Geekbench as well as Xbench return results way too low for my machine. In fact it appears results are exactly half the speed one would expect. In Xbench CPU power is about a score of 110 where I had 220 with 10.6 for example.

Now I had done an SSD update a couple of month back and this speed gain probably masked the CPU problem. I might even have damaged the small monitor synch cable during the procedure but all hardware tests (TechTool Pro 6 for example) show no problems.

I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC but to no avail. Also booting into SAVE Mode did not change the behavior. Here is my etre check profile:

Thank you Allan but removal of CMM didn't help. I purged the mac of all the other startup items, result is nice (disk speed wise, start up is way better now) but CPU and Geekbench still not up to old standards. I get nearly exactly half the result of what I should expect from this CPU.

Post another EtreCheck report, that way we can verify CleanMyMac has been completely uninstalled!!

You, also, have waaaay too many login/startup items/apps launching and running in the background.

You need to get this list to below six items or less.

Add or remove automatic items

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

Select your user account, then click Login Items.

Do one of the following:

Click Add ➕ below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.

If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)

Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete ➖ below the list on the right.

My bad. I see you stated you already did this.

Disable TechTool protection. It is not needed and is, also, a source of OS X performance slowdowns.

Also, you may want to reconfigure your BackBlaze backup software to only perform data backups during times of prolonged inactivity of your Mac.

Also, disable and/or delete the WDC (Western Digital) software. It is NOT needed by OS X and is known to cause system issues.

Somebody posted a very similar problem, resetting SMC helped there. Running Bench I can see normal degradation when running other tasks (i.e. from 110 CPU which is max of what I can get at the moment to 80-90 when running other apps) So it really seems to be some preset which keeps the CPU from running both cores or such.

You appear to have corrupted that Mac by using garbage software. If you want your Mac to work as it is designed to work, don't use such things. "Maintenance" software and similarly categorized utilities not required for your own productivity, communication, or entertainment should be avoided. If you do not know how to discriminate between merely worthless software and potentially harmful software, review your Gatekeeper settings: OS X : About Gatekeeper - Apple Support. Gatekeeper is designed to help prevent you from inadvertently installing garbage software, and it has been disabled on that Mac.

  1. Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. That report indicates Time Machine has not been used for a long time. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.

I know of no offsite, subscription-based backup services that work well with Macs.

  2. Do not use utilities that interfere with the Mac's cooling system.
  3. Uninstall "MacCleanse" according to its instructions.
  4. Uninstall "TechTool Pro" according to its instructions.
  5. Uninstall "CleanMyMac". Read below.

It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.

There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.

Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.

Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:

  • If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
  • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
    • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
    • When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
    • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
    • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.

To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X

To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device.

Well, I've tried two more different start up drives, 10.10 and 10.8 respectively . Results still the same. This discourages me from trying a complete reinstall, but when I find the time I'll give it a try w/o much hope.

Even digging deep into the system and removing a smc file specific to my Mac didn't help.

Also so it seems to be a problem not very common, that means a kind of slowdon is a VERY common problem, but just not this type. May it is hardware related after all. I damaged the v synch cable in the install process of the SS. But that seems to have no effect on the CPU.

I'm thinking it might be a thermal problem or a bad thermal sensor.

I wasn't aware that clean my Mac had such a bad reputation, digging round the net a bit finds a couple of positive things but mostly warnings. My bad.

If anyone has a new suggestion short of a complete wipe and reinstall it would be greatly appreciated.
