Upgrade from SL to ML, lose high-res scanning

Can anyone tell me why My Canon MP640 can scan at all resolutions up to 4800 x 9600 when I'm running Snow Leopard, but I'm limited to 600 x 600 in Mountain Lion?

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

On Sierra (perhaps previous versions also) the menu items in ImageCapture only go up to 600dpi, but you can type in any value you like up to 19200dpi (the maximum the printer supports), and it will use that. You are limited to a scan size of 21000 pixels wide, 30000 pixels high, and a data size (I assume this is total pixels times 3 bytes) of 1.8GB. This is enough to scan the entire area at 2400dpi, or smaller areas at higher resolution.

Well, at least the kind folks at Canon USA were able to find me a work-around using manual entries in their bundled scanning utility -- 4800 and 9600 dpi working in ML!

<editorial> Too bad Apple is now focused on eye candy and submerging OS X into the shallow pool that is iOS. Dumbing down Image Capture to no more than 600 dpi is one of many steps backward from Snow Leopard. </editorial>
