when i plug in my iPhone 5 to my mac book, my laptop does't read that its plugged in, therefor i can't back up my photos or sync music onto my phone... what do i do????

To check your cord and USB connection, plug in your device and go to About this Mac > System Report > USB. Do this for each USB port. If your device is not shown there, try a different cord.
