Q: WIFI Problem 10.10.3

I have also experienced Yosemite wi-fi issues.

It seems to have botched my entire Apple wireless network.

I've been a Mac user for 20+ years and I have tried everything I know and have seen suggested.

This is costing me and it is very frustrating.

Yes, it's frustrating. My wifi has gone up-and-down every 1-3 days since the beginning of November when i first installed Yosemite. I have to connect a USB-to-RJ45 dongle on my MacBook Air to get internet access. How does that sound? This was supposed to be fixed in 10.10.1, 10.10.2, and 10.10.3. But it's still broken. That means wifi hasn't worked for me for the last FOUR Yosemite releases. I don't use iCloud or bluetooth or upload gobs of photos like everybody else seems to be doing. Yet it still doesn't work. Wish i could just go back to Maverick. This will scar my Apple experience FOREVER: Wifi on a Macbook Air just didn't work (went up and down) for SIX MONTHS!!!! And they haven't fixed it in three updates?!?!?!?!?!?!

Currently, my MacBook Air is detecting none of the 20 or so wifi networks it usually detects in my building. I expect wifi to automagically "start working" in another 2-3 days. That's what's been happening for the past six months. The only reason you're able to read my post now is because my MBA is tethered to my router with a 50' ethernet cable. It covers the carpeting. It's huge. It's long. If follows the laptop everywhere. Yes. Frustrating. And more....

I had absolutely same problem. Switching off bluetooth helped.

from what you describe this sounds like your wireless card is dying. I doubt Mavericks would work if you tried it now. Get it checked at an Apple Store.

I Have found a temporary solution without having to turn Bluetooth off, however it does involve turning wi-fi off. I have connected my late 2014 Mac mini via Ethernet to a older model Airport Express. This is paired to my router and therefore becomes a defector wi-if dongle. This has provided a solution until Apple finds it within their heart to correct what has been called OSX's Windows Vista.

Thanks wifiguru, I kinda hope you're right. Hmm...what about these thoughts, which are why i think it's software and not hardware:

1) This problem started *exactly* when I installed Yosemite in late October 2014. It seems like too much of a coincidence that both events happened at the same time: Yosemite install and wifi card dies?

2) Apple wifi engineering has contacted me multiple times through the Apple bug reporter website, asked for many wifi diag logs, and even called me on the phone in February to collect data on this problem. They didn't mention the possibility of a hardware issue. If they thought this was likely, I think they would've closed my bug with the note "go to an Apple store" like they did with my (unrelated) iPod Touch problem.

  Apparently Apple wifi engineering didn't see a hardware problem in the numerous wifi diag zip files i sent them (???).

3) A wifi card shouldn't die after only two years of usage.

4) Apparently a lot of other people have Yosemite wifi problems, ever since the first release, so my problem seems to fit with theirs.

5) I was on the phone with apple tech support in December 2014 and they didn't mention and wifi diag i could run that would point to a hardware problem.

6) the problem is so intermittent, I'm not even sure i could reproduce it at an Apple store, given the advanced scheduling required at the Genius bar.

BTW, i rebooted to Safe mode, and that brought wifi back. then rebooted again into regular mode and wifi has been up since then.

wifiguru - also, I found this in my notes, i.e. i ran the Apple Hardware Test when I first detected this problem upon installation of Yosemite:

Seems like a hardware error in which two problems occur:

  1) laptop doesn't see ANY of the 20+ networks in the building that it usually does.

  2) laptop does see those 20 networks, but can't connect to mine.

GOAL: run AHT (apple hardware test): http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1509

1) Shut down your computer. Then, press the power button to turn it back on.

2) Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears.

It takes a minute or so for AHT to start up and inspect your hardware

To exit AHT, click Restart or Shut Down at the bottom of the window.

RESULT: no problems found.

I had the exact same issue and turning the photos upload off for one day fixed it.

Apply the fix, uploaded to the free Russian hosting by the guy with Arabian name without any explanation what does this patch do? Call me a paranoid, but it looks like a worm

In the forum I found was saying that is the kext from the version 10.10.1, in yosemite 10.10.1 my wifi worked.

Also commented that if you have a time machine backup you can use your own driver to restore it back to life your wifi, I don´t have it.

Since I applied the fix my wifi does not give any problem

Slow WiFi issues after 10.10.2

Using 10.10.3 here with mid-2012 rMBP. I connect to an Xfinity Hotspot (neighbor). Since 10.10.3, and iOS 8.3 really, if I restart my computer, I have so much difficulty getting my connection back. I have to remove the WiFi service, add it again, go into the advanced settings, etc. I have to shut off WiFi, turn it back on. I mean it takes about 7 minutes to get going every time I restart. Sometimes I can't get a connection from hour to hour.

My iPhone is worse. I can connect no problem, then all of a sudden, it will drop the connection. It's  much harder on the iPhone to get it back. Never had wifi issues with earlier version of Mac OS. Not fun. It just happened before I sent this. Whatev.

My 2012 Mac mini with 2 hdds and 10Gb ram worked perfectly before this update. Yesterday it took a turn for the worst. I couldn't join any wifi - when connecting it would state connection timed out - it would try to join for 18 seconds and wouldn't join any known or unknown wifi networks.  I tried many things to overcome this but the only thing that worked was resetting the PRAM which put it back to the original hard drive with OS X Mavericks on it and it was joined to the wifi working perfectly. I then changed the startup disk back to the SSD with Yosemite on it and then that's the only way it worked again. The only trouble is now I'm only getting 1-4Mbps as opposed to 9-11Mbps. I went through and ran a couple of terminal commands and created another new location in wifi tried another restart and was back to 10Mbps. I just can't believe that this was working perfectly before this upgrade. SO annoying but so thankful I had a another boot option.
