Q: WIFI Problem 10.10.3

Has anyone else tried to re-install 10.10.3 using the combo update? That seemed to really do the trick for me.

As I already mentioned in a previous post of this thread, I installed it about 10 days ago. I can confirm now that it worked pretty well, I haven't noticed any connection drop since. The only thing is that the Mac takes a bit longer than usual to hook back to Wifi when going out from sleep mode, but to be honest my Wifi is from my ISP equipment, so it might just be a bit long to provide an address to my Mac. I haven't experienced any drop in the connection when working since I did install the update.

Personally, I have done every single workaround ever listed. I even bought a new hard drive and did a clean install.

I use an Airport Extreme and even when I do get it to connect, it's uselessly slow and constantly drops out.

I have a macbook pro mid 2011. Never had an issue before 10.10.3  When I take my laptop to cafes and work, I have to jump through some hoops but can eventually get a stable fast connection.

My theory is that it's the Apple devices confusion each other because I also have a late model iMac running 10.7.5 I sill use occasionally along with an iPhone 4s and 3rd generation iPad. On top of that clients come to my studio and have at least 2 Apple devices themselves. Occasionally I have upwards of 20 Apple devices in my studio.

Please don't start in with "Update all your devices talk" unless you're going to loan me and everyone who walks into my studio $6K. It's bogus and asinine argument to make given the fact that Apple prides itself on device compatibility. IT'S THE SOLE REASON I BUY ALL APPLE PRODUCTS. They are supposed to work together. It's made for an embarrassing work environment.

I wonder how many people are using Apple routers that are having these problems because I really think it's the Airport Extreme causing the issues but who knows?!

I just want to add my two cents to this thread.

I've noticed the issue occurs (whole network dying) when uploading continuously for an extended period of time (over five minutes). This includes when my portable apple devices are plugged in to charge and they start to backup to iCloud, Photos updating or even manually uploading a video to youTube; from any device on the network.

I've had this problem since iOS 8.2 came out (and matching OSX). It is so frustrating. I had all my hopes pinned on 8.3, but now I'm just angry.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!!! Right now anyway. Here is what happened.

So in Apple > System Preferences > Network, the only service I had was Wi-Fi. I removed all the others as I don't use them, and figure if they are not there that's one less troubleshooting issue I need to worry about.

But... even though I had only Wi-Fi as the lone service, when I clicked the pref. cog below the services list, and chose "set service order," I saw Bluetooth DUN. I thought this was strange, as I only had Wi-Fi, and I did notice that when I turned on Bluetooth often for my mouse, my WiFi would act up. I could not remove that Bluetooth DUN listing from the order list.

So again, I was struggling to get online, and for the **** of it, I thought what if I add a Bluetooth DUN item to my service list. So I did. I got the beachball and it was very slow. However, once I added it, I pressed the '-' button to remove the service. As soon as I did that, and I mean as soon, my Wi-Fi connected and I was online again. I then went back to "set service order" and the Bluetooth DUN was gone.

Either that solved my problem since upgrading to 10.10.3, or it was a HUGE coincidence that just as I click the button I got my WiFi back.

If anyone else is in the same boat, give this a try. Before I did it, I did PRAM reset/SMC reset. I removed my WiFi service so nothing showed in the list, then added WiFi back, then Bluetooth DUN.

I'm *REALLY* hoping this did it, as it's been miserable since 10.10.3. I've never had WiFi issues and used to think people were out of their minds. I've since been bitten by the bug.

I'll post back if anything changes.

I am afraid that it works for me exactly the same way as tuning off/on bluetooth from the menu bar: WiFi works a few minutes and disappears again. Only one thing that works for me is turning off bluetooth constantly.

I also disable Bluetooth and it made WiFi working

But after some time WiFi still drops and i have to switch WiFi off and on to get it working.

Though, with switched off BT, this problem occurs much less often.

WiFi still working great. No problems. I've been using bluetooth the entire time with mouse/keyboard. I'll update as needed.

I've been plagued with this problem since installing Yosemite. All my macs used to be super fast at boot and instantly had an internet connection - 20 seconds from power on.  It still takes just seconds to get to my desktop, but takes another 5 to 10 minutes to be able to use any Apple software that relies on an internet connection.  Sometimes goes straight in, but rarely - it's not consistent.

I have 4 airports scattered around the home and AirPort Utility shows green lights for all of them straight away ... but orange for an internet connection.

Here is the weird thing - whilst safari just sits there waiting and waiting for the green light, if I open Google Chrome - it gets to the internet immediately.  I go back to safari (still trying to load a page), copy the url and paste it into Chrome ... and bingo - instant hit ...  meanwhile, Safari is still trying to make the connection.  Once the internet connection status in Airport utility switches to green - Safari works. 

If I don't reboot, the connection seems to hold ... but it's not 100% - safari goes slow every now and then ... and when I check the internet status in such a situation - there's an orange light.  No such issue when the orange light is on using Chrome.  I prefer the layout and ability to synch everything across multiple devices instantly with safari ... but am seriously considering switching my default browser to Chrome. 

I'm not an expert here, but this tells me the problem probably has nothing to do with wifi and everything to do with how apple software is reaching out to the internet.  If Google Chrome can get out, why can't apple software?

In short if you are having issues with getting to the internet, try using Chrome - it seems a lot more stable.

Well, my problems came back in a big way. So I had to bite the bullet and do a clean install from a 10.10.3 usb thumbdrive I made. I'm about 3 hours later and I have perfect WiFi. But again, don't know if this is just my luck for now, then the bad WiFi comes back. I can say my WiFi is much faster now, and it reminds me of the WiFi speeds I got pre 10.10.3 update. I did an upgrade in place for 10.10.3. With the clean install, I'll certainly track any issues that come up.

It's a pain I know, but in my case, it was the only way. I tried EVERYTHING. I guess I'm going back to not upgrading the OS until I can do a clean install.

I'm happy to report that after the clean install, once I'm on wifi I don't get disconnected. Now, even after the clean install, it still takes several tries to get connected *sometimes*. I have to turn wifi on/off, run the diagnostic tool, etc. But I get on much faster than it used to, and the important thing is that when I'm on, I'm on. Only one drop since I last posted and I got back on in a few minutes. But my iPhone 5 with iOS 8.3, that has some issues too. I reinstalled iOS 8.3 and then restored a backup, and that too seems to be much better. So I think this is definitely something Apple-related as I'm having issues on both devices. I may borrow a PC and do a test with Windows to see if the Mac is having issues, is the PC good. I spent so much time yesterday on this.... basically blew my entire day. Oh well, I'll post back if anything changes.

I just remembered that when waking from sleep, pre 10.10.3, I often had to turn off wifi and then turn it back on to get back on, but that only happened at a friends house. Never at my place. So that was strange. I'll see if that happens still as well.

there are a lot of us on this post and some very good info. I've had a wifi problem (there may be multiple unrelated wifi problems) since early November with all four Yosemite releases(no bluetooth, no iCloud), and Apple wifi engineering knows exactly which router I have (August 2012-purchased Cisco/Linksys EA4500 using 5GHz radio), so if my version of the wifi problem was not an Apple problem, I think you can be sure they would have mentioned that in their discussions with me.

that being said, i have indeed considered buying another make/model router, just as a test, on a 30-day Best Buy return, or something like that. Still considering this.

  why don't we all crowdsource this and respond to the post with the make/model/purchase-date/2.5GHz vs. 5GHz router we're using, and whether or not any fix has worked, i.e. if the problem is still occurring, to see how this(*these*) wifi problems distribute across different routers, to see if there's any pattern?

fyi: my problem is that wifi drops every 2-3 days and i power cycle the laptop to recover.

my router: Cisco/Linksys EA4500 using 5GHz radio, August 2012-purchased. Current Firmware: 2.1.41.162351 (up-to-date)

Well, for me at least.

Setup: 2015 13" MBA, 10.10.3

My wifi connection was cutting out every 10 min or so and I had to turn the airport off/on to regain connection.

So far it's been over 1 hour with no disconnects.

What I did:

1. Preferences > Network > Highlight Bluetooth > Setup COG > MARK SERVICE AS INACTIVE (simply turning it off did nothing)

2. Wifi > Advanced > TCP/IP > local link only

3. Network > Setup COG > Set Service Order > drag wifi to top

4. Network > remove thunderbolt connection (doubt this step did anything.  I never use it so just got rid of it.)

LMK if this works for you guys, too.

Tried, does not work for me, lost WiFi in 5 minutes. In my case, the problem appears only when I upload significant amount of data which is always easy to test using dropbox, for example. Connection immediately dies when I do it with these, as well as with other settings.

Exactly the issues I was having mate. Could replicate it no bother by initiating an iCLoud backup. Network would die. See my post above about new router solving the issue. Not ideal but is a possible last resort if you are loaded!

Ah, well we appear to be having different problems. My wifi connection cuts out constantly even if I'm not uploading.
