Q: Updated to 10.10.3 and now iPhoto won't open

I upgraded the OS 10.10.3 and now iPhoto won't open. It says "the version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite.  Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store."  However, when I go to the Mac App Store, there is no iPhoto.

I don't know what version of iPhoto I was running. I believe it was the most recent (9.6)

I also noticed that the iPhoto icon has a circle with a line through it Screen Shot 2015-04-09 at 10.08.45 AM.png

The support article says I can use iPhoto concurrently with the new photos

Delete all versions of the iPhoto.app that's on your hard drive.  Induce any alias files for them as well.  Go to the Purchases section at the App Store and download iPhoto 9.6.1.

I downloaded "iPhoto library upgrader" which fixed the library for use in "Photos" app.  Then I ran the "Photos" app and did not lose any photos or albums.

OK, thanks for confirming. I'm afraid there'll never be an iPhoto 10.x.  Any way, I'm back in business, though I will not further expand my iPhoto library. I have converted my library to Photos (though the iPhoto Lib still exists and can be consulted), and can only hope that Photos will be further developed (read: get some essential features of iPhoto included). I have the feeling that Photos is still in its infancy. But just like iPhoto, I'm only using Photos to store my jpgs. The RAW-files (Canon CR2) are imported through Adobe Bridge to an external hard drive, and developed through a RAW-converter of choice (sometimes Aperture, other times Lightroom, nowadays more and more DxO Optics Pro).

I will stick with iphoto as I only use it to show slide shows on Apple TV. With iphoto I can manage order of pics - i number them all 1,2 erc so I can organise with titles - something u cannot do with Photo. Thanks

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

    *

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

Thank you, Terence Devlin. This worked for me to get iPhoto 9.6.1 and resume using it after 10.10.3 update.

Like some others here, I do all software updates via App Store and never saw (or rejected) 9.6.1. It's baffling that a significant, required update (in order to keep running iPhoto while staying up to date with OS X) was skipped. Why it wasn't included in 10.10.3 -- perhaps to *push* more users to Photos?

It was released before 10.10.3, that's why it was not included. iPhoto updates have never been part of the OS updates. Perhaps you're not as up-to-date as you thought...
