Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion

Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

I have verified and they recovery HD and repaired permissions.

In addition, verified the HD and repaired permissions from the regular operating system.

The message that keeps returning during verification is

"Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD"

This disk needs to be repaired using Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo.

When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility"

The Red error message that appears says"Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks.

Invalid volume free block count.

(it should be 79656384 instead of 796563383)

The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.

File System check exit code is 8

Error: This disk needs to be repaired usi..es window appears, choose Disk Utility.

This occurred upon install of OS X 10.10.3. I am guessing that since I have repaired and verified both the Recovery and regular HD that I need to reinstall OS X.

Unless there is a way to repair using the recovery HD that I haven't done.

Did I miss something? I never actually see anything that says recovery HD only a disk utility after command-R and it seems to have had no affect.

Are you booting up or restarting the machine while holding Command + R? Then it will take a little to boot into recovery. You should then see a window like this:

That is the Disk Utility you want to use.

That is the Mac OS X Utilities - Disk Utility I was using as Kappy showed above.

Now since I was heading in the direction of a complete reinstall of OS X 10.10.3 using that utility following on with restoring from backup (I use time machine), I gave a try to a tip found searching online but not widely recommended "Command - S" followed by "fsck -fy" once in the basic mode.

Well it appears to have worked. The comeback was repaired successful and the file counts corrected. I then restarted and used regular disk utility to verify and NO ERRORS!

Of course the system may melt down now that I did that but for now all seems well.
