Q: Reverting to iPhoto after Photos migration

Does anyone know if it is ok to delete the new Photos library from the Pictures folder after you've migrated your iPhoto library to Photos? This is the situation I'm in - I migrated my library to Photos but I HATE it. I am very invested in Events and being able to review each new batch of photos before categorizing them into the appropriate events, and with this new app it's like everything is in a giant shoebox, it seems to include all my Photo Stream pictures in my library before I'm ready (I typically delete a lot of dud pictures every time I import, now they are all mixed in automatically and I have to remember how far back I've gone through and culled), and there's no way to tell which pictures haven't been categorized into an event yet. Worst of all, there's no way to hide photos from all views. Not only are hidden albums/events not even a thing anymore, Photos "conveniently" makes a whole new album of all the pictures I didn't want anyone to see. So now instead of me being the only one who would know where to look for hidden photos/Events in my library when they were unhidden, they're all collected in one place at the top level of my albums view. Why anyone would want an automatic, top-level album of all photos in an entire library that were meant not to be see, I don't know. Seems to defeat the entire privacy/security purpose of the Hide feature. Not to mention, anyone can still see all hidden photos when scrolling through the Albums view.

Long story short, I am RUNNING back to iPhoto for as long as Apple allows it to be used. Now, I know that any changes I make to the iPhoto library won't carry over automatically to Photos. I'm fine with that as I don't intend to use Photos until I'm forced to. However, I know that at some point I will be forced to use it, and at that point its library will be (hopefully) several years out of date. Since Photos creates symbolic links to the photo files, I know I could easily have deleted the iPhoto library when I migrated to Photos, but does that work both ways? I guess my question is, can I delete the Photos library I have now, keep working with my iPhoto library until iPhoto is killed completely, and then re-import the entire library back into Photos? Or do my photo files actually now live in the Photos library package instead of the iPhoto library package and deleting the Photos library will delete all my photos?

Any clarification on my options would be appreciated.

Have not seen the patch but only about 2% of my iPhoto library migrated and there are no albums set up...I have over 200 albums in iPhoto.

The old iPhoto Library is still there and looks great.... I'm not sure about it in Apple TV as yet.

When i went to open iPhoto nothing happened. When I double clicked on the iPhoto Library app in the finder it opened.

Right now with what I know this is an absurd thing with Photos. This is much worse that the Apple Maps problem a few years ago.

I would migrate if it would take all albums and events as they are arranged in iPhoto...why would I not expect this????

I agree, I HATE the new photos and wish Apple would stop doing things like this. WHY do they make such huge changes without warning. I loved the events feature and now it's not really there. This burn was too much, I don't trust apple anymore. I'll go back to relying on my own folder storage. I hate apple so much right now.

Apple has released an iPhoto patch without telling anyone.

If that's the patch you're referring to that was released more than two years ago and yes, they told everyone who tried to update an out of date library about it.

    Terry -

If that's the patch? Who's 'everyone'?  And if you're admitting you don't know, why even speculate?  Others are likely to find the information useful.  I've been tinkering with iPhoto alone and with iPhoto Library Manager for more than three years and I never saw a notice about it much less something Apple supposedly went out of its way to tell us all about.  Interesting, too, that the tech company that helped me solve many Mac riddles since '92 didn't know about it either, odd since it's largely a Mac shop.

So, tell me again about 'everyone'.

No, that is not a patch for iPhoto, it's a library upgrader for iPhoto 7.

Can we assume that you are not running 9.6.1, but are running an incompatible version?

You ought to read what I read:

they told everyone who tried to update an out of date library about it.

That's everyone who tried to update an out of date library. They got a message telling them to download and apply that patch. Not everyone who had to update a library, just those who tried to update an out-of-date one. If yours wasn't, then you would not have got the message. But hey, don't take my word for it. Search this very forum for all the folks who asked questions about it. They knew, didn't they?

I've been tinkering with iPhoto since 2002. So, three years? That's impressive. Well done. And you want me to explain why the Mac support shop you use don't know their business? Really?

I  couldn't tell you what OS Terry is running even if I wanted to.

    As for me -

I hope you'll help me understand the practical difference between an 'updater' and a patch.  I long to graduate from the ranks of mere communicant to unimpeachable linguistics expert.

Gotta go.  Time to address Terry's assumptions.  Again.

As you seem to know nothing about Terry let's leave him out of this.

A patch fixes something that is broke, an update updates it to a newer version.

Once more you fail to answer the question, I will leave it to you now, Good Luck.

A level 8...I'll go with that...

After going to Yosemite I now have both Photo and iPhoto on board. Photo imported, at random, about 25% of my photos with no albums, events, etc. Also lost Photos for/albums for Apple TV.

I do have libraries for Photos and iPhoto however. I again backed up(external drive) the iPhoto library(9 hours) AND made a duplicate of the iPhoto Library in Picture Folder.  NOW...what to do...

A U-tube video explains I should delete my Photos Library (the one randomly selected by Photos) and change the name of my iPhotos Library to Photos Library.

This makes sense in that Photos would then see the old Library as something it created for the Photos app.

If you are still following me I am still worried about Photos "seeing" my albums I've made over the past ten years. Also how might this effect the Apple TV ....apparently Apple forgot all about this little issue.

    Your ideas are always appreciated....

    Terry -

I can read fine.  You can't.  I've used Macs personally and while heading small businesses that used Macs inclusively since '92, not 2002.  Change your bi-focals.  Sure, I'll accept an apology.  I'm not holding my breath.

I've dialed into these forums from time to time, but not often or for long, in the years Apple has hosted them.  You won't find my current nom de plume by searching for it covering earlier years.  I go here when I discover a flawed roll-out like Photo and try to see if others have replacements or workarounds.  I tried your MediaPro 1 solution, remember?  And I helped others save money & time by sharing my experience - it doesn't work.  This doesn't please you.  I understand.

I've never had an out-of-date Library, which means I'm not among your 'everyone' who has.  If one entity in the dataset 'everyone' experiences a different specific outcome, what may the reasonable person conclude about a statement ascribing that outcome to 'everyone'?

Why haven't I had an outdated Library?  Because I'm an auto-updater.  When Apple announces a product update, I receive the announcement and load the update.  This is a great service from a great company, our shared feelings about Photo notwithstanding.  I feel the pain of your more limited correspondents, but those who ignore simple auto-updates deserve the software they try to keep using.

I don't search these pages when I don't need to for the same reason I don't subscribe to (or waste me time on) Facebook.  People who use these things regularly do so for many reasons, I'm sure.  I told you mine.  I logged onto this string to find solutions to a problem.  Why did you logon?  Are you seeking a solution too, or are you all about sharing information that may or may not be correct, but which you'll defend regardless?  These pages shouldn't be about assuaging personal inadequacies.

Now about that final slur or yours.

You're been an authorized Apple Reseller with a coterie of loyal paying clients, businesses & individuals alike, for decades have you?   So you're entitled, nay 'duty bound', to diss one that is?  What would a reasonable person infer here?
