Q: Reverting to iPhoto after Photos migration

I couldn't agree more!  I hate the new "photos" as opposed to iPhoto.

So very simple - do not use it - use iPhoto instead until some OS upgrade breaks it

This is sad... almost as bad as the Apple Maps Introduction..if not worse!

Apple should support both Photos and iPhotos and let people decide which app has greater quality.  This would also allow those with years of photos to maintain their library.

It will be interesting what decisions are made at the corporate level....

Why not?   Probably a courtesy to their users.....

Yes, but no.  Since migrating to photos (as opposed to iPhoto), it's difficult to know which photos are going where.  There really are TOO many options.  There's photo stream and iCloud photo sharing and aperture and photos and iPhoto and... and... granted, I'm certainly no tech whiz, but come AWWUN!

I just wanna take a picture, and have it upload to all my devices instantly like Apple promised YEARZZZZZZZZZ ago.  Remember that?  How simple it was gonna be?  Pheh. I'm converting to Quakerism.  And quake.  Quake like it's 1899.

I don't ever recall that statement from Apple. But it does happen with an iPhone and iCloud. Just depends on what Photo App you wish to use as default. iPhotos is still my choice but certainly not a professional editing software. More of a photo album.

Seriously unhappy with the new iPhoto.  Was it changed just so somebody could say, "Oh, look we changed it?"  Sure seems so.  I had everything organized perfectly.  This is a mess.

They go to the destination you chose, Photos (if you have not changed anything) iPhoto or Image Capture are the other choices.

I have been following this discussion since I upgraded and lost the organization of over 100,000 photos.  When I read the responses - I am looking for ways to preserve my iPhoto organization for now - but I am also very aware that Apple at some point soon will quit supporting iPhoto.   Therefore, it is nice to know that I can still use iPhoto, but I am looking for a longtime, permanent solution.   I think everyone realizes they can still use iPhoto - but also know that that is probably temporary.   Since our organization did not carry over to Photos - we'd like to be proactive and find a solution that will be supported in the future.

I have been helped by several of the posts on how to not loose what I already have.   There have also been suggestions of other programs and feedback which was very helpful.  When I upgraded only 104,000 of the 109.700 photos that were in iPhoto made it to Photo.   I have no way of figuring out which ones were tossed.   Therefore, I am clinging to my iPhoto program with all of my pictures and organization.   But I would be a fool to think that will be a long term solution.

So, when you respond that people who preferred iPhoto should be happy - we can still use it - I think you are missing the overwhelming concern that this is a temporary situation and will not be supported in the future.  After the surprise and shock of having iPhoto switched to what is basically an iPhone App, and losing all organization that had been meticulously kept for a decade - we are looking to not have this happen again.  The next time it happens IPhoto may not still be there.

Photos is probably a great program - if one had started there.   The biggest problem is that the thousands of "Event" lines did not transfer from iPhoto.   It is a mistake to believe that the date and 'location' are all the information we want over a group of pictures.  It might have been awesome if that event line over a group of pictures transferred to my iPhone and iPad.   Because it is not realistic to go back and try to reconstruct 109,000 photos in a different organization - I feel like I have been betrayed.   I trusted Apple with ten years of photos and organization and they moved forward in a manner that had no respect or concern for longtime users who had depended on iPhoto. 

I also realize that the next, best thing is the Cloud and that Apple wants us to store all our photos there.   First, I have way too many photos to pay for iCloud storage, and second - I don't need to access all 109,000 pictures from my iPhone or iPad.   I recognize that this will work for some people and is a nice option, but just an unnecessary expense for me.

That said, I am searching for a solution going forward.   Photos will not do what I need it to do organization wise.   Yes, they have Albums - but I don't want over 5,000 albums.  Nor do I want this surprise again.   So, yes, we can still use iPhoto, but we have been burned and want to be sure we have a plan moving forward.

iPhoto is guaranteed to run on 10.10. (It may also run on whatever comes later, but it's not guaranteed.) Basically as long as you don't update your system to the point where iPhoto doesn't run, you'll be okay. (and that just means waiting a few days before updating and checking to see if iPhoto continues to perform.)

Going forward you need to decide what kind of a shooter are you? Raw? Jpeg? Serious hobbyist or Pro? Family Snapper? Obviously you shoot in volume and that's going to push you towards a pro level app. But migration isn't *that* enormous an issue. An Event was really analogous to a folder with a fancy icon. So, exporting, Event by Event to folders in the finder, will leave you with the basics of your organisation in whatever app you choose next. I'm pretty much finished the same process now with my 60k library going to Lightroom. A PITA to have to do it, but Photos is not for me and Aperture is dead.

Apple don't want you to store all your photos in the Cloud and more than they wanted you to use iPhoto. These apps are opportunities. The have their uses (and misuses), and they either fit your needs or not. But whatever app you choose, the truth is that the same can happen again. Adobe can drop Lightroom, Phase One or whoever could be bought out by somebody who drops the Mac version (it's happened before with other apps) and so on. All you can do to protect  yourself is have a rational organisation system and that whatever app you choose allows you to export whatever you have put into the app.

I was able to use the information in the link you provided (a big THANK YOU also to Barney -15E for posting the info in that link), to install the latest version of iPhoto.  So now, I can access either iPhoto or Photos.

Like so many others, I have many photos and documented Events on iPhoto (over 33,000 photos).  It initially appeared that not all my photos were transferred to or accessible by the new Photos.  At least now, by having both iPhoto and Photos, I can compare.

It seems all converted ok for me.  iPhoto indicated I had 33,xxx "items".  The new Photos identifies "photos" separately from "videos", and the sum of the two adds up to the number of "items" on iPhoto.  The size is about 3GB smaller on Photos, though.  And all the documentation I had in iPhoto on my numerous Events, appears to have been retained when converted to Photos.  I can find all my iPhoto Events (with title documentation) in the new Photos Albums.  All iPhoto Events now appear in one Photos Album entitled "iPhoto Events".  But the Events are still separated, and still have their iPhoto titles.

Now I will begin exploring Photos and decide what I do going forward.  Thanks again to leonie and Barney.

I couldn't work out how to add location details for photos which are imported with GPS details. This was real easy to do in iPhoto. Having the city was enough detail for me.

The lack of stars in Photos was also a deal breaker for me. I read that you add that to the description but it sounds really slow and tedious for me. I used the stars to help cull the back photos from the good when loading into iPhoto. Bad would get a 1 star, I then filtered on 1 stars and did a mass delete. Then I would give them the final star rating, really useful when friends/family just want to see a few or your best pics, rather than everything. I'd then move them to the event that I wanted to store them in, e.g. Family, Friends, etc, when was a basic categorisation so I could at least have a rough way of narrowing down the selection.
