Q: Reverting to iPhoto after Photos migration

Does anyone know if it is ok to delete the new Photos library from the Pictures folder after you've migrated your iPhoto library to Photos? This is the situation I'm in - I migrated my library to Photos but I HATE it. I am very invested in Events and being able to review each new batch of photos before categorizing them into the appropriate events, and with this new app it's like everything is in a giant shoebox, it seems to include all my Photo Stream pictures in my library before I'm ready (I typically delete a lot of dud pictures every time I import, now they are all mixed in automatically and I have to remember how far back I've gone through and culled), and there's no way to tell which pictures haven't been categorized into an event yet. Worst of all, there's no way to hide photos from all views. Not only are hidden albums/events not even a thing anymore, Photos "conveniently" makes a whole new album of all the pictures I didn't want anyone to see. So now instead of me being the only one who would know where to look for hidden photos/Events in my library when they were unhidden, they're all collected in one place at the top level of my albums view. Why anyone would want an automatic, top-level album of all photos in an entire library that were meant not to be see, I don't know. Seems to defeat the entire privacy/security purpose of the Hide feature. Not to mention, anyone can still see all hidden photos when scrolling through the Albums view.

Long story short, I am RUNNING back to iPhoto for as long as Apple allows it to be used. Now, I know that any changes I make to the iPhoto library won't carry over automatically to Photos. I'm fine with that as I don't intend to use Photos until I'm forced to. However, I know that at some point I will be forced to use it, and at that point its library will be (hopefully) several years out of date. Since Photos creates symbolic links to the photo files, I know I could easily have deleted the iPhoto library when I migrated to Photos, but does that work both ways? I guess my question is, can I delete the Photos library I have now, keep working with my iPhoto library until iPhoto is killed completely, and then re-import the entire library back into Photos? Or do my photo files actually now live in the Photos library package instead of the iPhoto library package and deleting the Photos library will delete all my photos?

Any clarification on my options would be appreciated.

No there doesn't "have to be" a way. Tell Apple you want a feature enhancement.

There has ti be a way when your working on a macbook and you right click on an image to have the option of iPhoto instead of Photos?????

Since iPhoto is in its end of life stage I don't expect Apple to make changes to the system so it can integrate with iPhoto so we'll have to do with the most expedient workaround, i.e. drag the photos to the iPhoto icon in the Dock.  This is just as fast as the Control (right) - click method in Safari and scrolling down to the Add to iPhoto option.

Seems to me that using Apple forums to promote competitive products is a bit over the top and rude

Maybe you're right, I'm a 10 user of Apple product of software and hardware, but after almost a week of struggling with old backup of my iPhoto Library on time machine, Photo, iCloud and all this mess I finally find the way to backup all my pics in an easy (and logic) way and I want to share this with other disappointed and frustrated users!!

Flickr is a good option too, and free for up to a 1TB. Have you actually tried this yet with iPhoto or Aperture? What exactly gets uploaded? The originals? The Previews?  Both? I had a look at it and I see it makes no mention of Photos at all, and I could find nothing explaining exactly what it uploads from the other apps.

I'm checking it right now and I see that it uploads a picture smaller than the original  with all the EXIF metadata but the philosophy is different, Google Photos it's just a backup and nothing else, (I've heard bad things about Flickr pictures resolution) that's what I needed! If I modify (very basic tools) a pictures I get to choose if I want this modification to be applied to all the other devices or not, in addiction if I delete a pictures from my Photo Library it's stille exists in my Google Photo library.

(I've heard bad things about Flickr pictures resolution)

Define 'resolution', as that's a concept that means  much different things to different people. I've been able to download full size images from Flickr.

I see that it uploads a picture smaller than the original  with all the EXIF metadata

So it's not backing up the Library and it's not backing up the original? Not much good for back ups in my book, but YMMV

    Edit:

There are two different way to upload your pics in Google Photos:

    1 High resolution

    2 Original resolution

in the 2d case the space won't be free anymore and your're gonna pay for it (10$ month for 1Tb), actually not bad at all.

I think that the Flickr issue must be the same as Google Photos (free for low quality pics) but I'm not positive about that.

Again, we need a definition of 'resolution' which can mean (at least) either the dimensions of a photo or the putative dpi, depending on who you ask... Others see it as some measure of "quality" without ever specifying what that means.

For Google Photos resolution it has to be dimension, because if I upload the same picture in the 2 way, one is 843Kb (2448x3264) and the other stays the same as the original: 3,2M (2448x3264).

NO it's not dimension, as both "high quality" and original are the same. It looks like Jpeg compression is what they're talking about. That "high" quality image is about 25% of the file size of the original.

How exactly did you delete Photos library? I've never used terminal.

Also, is there a way to get my faces that are currently in iPhoto into photos?

I thought they were supposed to transfer over but they did not.

I might not need to delete it, if I can get all my faces.

After I do delete it, if I decide to use Photos again, how do I reimport everything from iPhoto into Photos?

I,too, hate Photos. I considered using my time machine to go back but worry that everything won't work as it did originally.

THAT'S THE ANSWER!!!!!  Thank you so much - There is an album inside Photos that is called "iPhoto Events"  This just revived me from my massive breakdown.  As others have indicated, it looked like all photos were thrown to a big ole shoebox; however, the album that was created automatically in the migration took into account all the events that I had created in iPhoto.
