With the new update and with apple moving away from iPhoto is it still possible to sync the photos from the Desktop Photos app to the iPhone like we used to be able to thru iPhoto? Right now it seems like I can only sync directly from folders on my computer.

Yes you can. Some folks report that Photos doesn't show up in their iTunes when they go to sync, but that seems to fix itself over a few hours.
Ah. Thanks for the help. Turns out I just had to restart iTunes for Photos to show up. 😝
