New iPhone ordered/swapping Question

Here is the scenario:

I bought an iPhone 6 on first day last year. At the time I didn't think I wanted the larger 6+.

My wife's iPhone 4S is on its last legs and finally said the other day its time for a new one, but she doesn't want a 6+. She likes my 6...

I ordered a 6+, it should be here in a couple of days.

Here is what I need to accomplish:

I am going to get the new 6+

My wife wants my 6

So - what is the simplest method to accomplish this? The new phone will come with a new microSIM (AT&T).

*I think step 1 is a full backup of both iPhones."

Do I activate the new phone when it comes in, THEN do the swap with my current SIM? Or should I put in my current SIM and THEN activate it?

I assume the rest (data/apps/etc) all will be the last step on both phones - as a restore from backup?

iPhone 6, iOS 8.1, 128GB

I'm less of than thrilled with the experience..

I unboxed iphone 6 plus. Swapped in my sim and connected to my Macabook Pro with fresh full backup to iTunes of my iPhone 6.

first- iPhone 6+ had to update to iOS 8.3. Check

then, iTunes allowed me to "restore from backup" (After turning off Find My iPhone?) check

30 minutes later, phone reboots and supposedly is done. Interesting that all that was apparently put on phone after all of that was my email accounts, contacts and 64 videos (I didn't have but 3 videos on my iPhone 6...). None the f my music showed up. Not a single app showed up.

30 minutes of "restoring"... Ugh. What was the point?

You need to now sync it.

DO I actually HAVE to activate the new sim, or can I just swap over her sim from her current iPhone 4S?

The SIM in the iPhone 4S will not fit in the iPhone 6.

You can cut it down to fit if you want.

Easier to simply call to activate the new SIM with her old number.

SIgh...and I cannot get my email accounts to work right with the iPhone 6 plus... I enter password, and get this. I'm 100% certain password is correct, I just tried it on another device. Arrrggghhh!!!!

Well - I "solved" the email issue - by deleting accounts and just setting them up anew... What was the point of the info being "backed up and restored"... if it was gonna get hosed somehow in the process? SMH

So I'm down to basically my contacts and some photos being restored - and videos that have been on my MacBook Pro, but not on my iPhone... until now....?
