The DND icon appears next to a contact in my IMessages but not in the status bar and is silencing only messages from the one individual. How would I delete the DND icon next to the one contact?

Go to iMessage and select the conversation with that person. Now press "Details" at top right of screen. You can switch DND on/off there.
