If you've changed the password for an email account, then to update it for the Mail app on your iPad tap on the email address in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and then tap on 'account' on the next screen and you should get a popup where you can update its password
No that doesn't help as the password keeps going back to 8 dots and it won't change for good. There must be deeper settings. I do appreciate the suggestion.
The other thing is it impossible to discuss on Apple site so I am trying to email you.
Once you've entered the password it then be shown as a series of eight dots for security reasons i.e. so that nobody else can view it (and 8 dots, instead of the correct number for your password, so that it doesn't show how many characters there are in your password). As long as you enter the correct password and tap Done top right when you've typed it in then it should be remembered and let you download new email ; if you also have a password set for sending email then you might also need to go into the SMTP settings on that screen, selecting the outgoing server name on the next screen, and update the password there as well.
