Q: Messages App Won't Open

So, I got the new OS X update (Version 10.10.3) and the OS X Yosemite Recovery Update (Version 1.0) for my MacBook Air yesterday, and ever since, I can't seem to open the Messages on the laptop.  I'll click the Messages icon, and it just doesn't respond to opening. (You know how the app will usually jump up and down to show that it's about to open.  The Messages icon doesn't do that anymore.)  All of the other apps are working properly, except for the Messages one.  I tried removing the files from the Messages folder, and that worked a little bit, but it erased previous messages that I had.  Also, I opened the MacBook again today, and the app stopped opening again, and it shows that the files are in the folder again.

Can someone please help me with this?  Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

If it is not launching from the DOCK check the Applications Folder itself.

If that is not working then open the Font Book and scroll down the list to be able to see AppleGothic.

This should be Active, not Duplicated and should Validate (File Menu after highlighting it).

Although this Font is needed by Messages to open properly (sometimes it goes a little further but none of the Menu item work), it is not in the System Font set.

    Hard Drive name/System/Library/Fonts

It is in fact in Hard Drive Name/Library/Fonts

Ralph, this solution did not work for us, unfortunately, but thanks for your post.

    Hi,

Try Restarting the Mac whilst holding down the ALT+CMD+P+R keys all at the same time until you have heard three Start up Bongs.

Then let the Computer Start up normally.

Having this problem too. Transferred from an older mac air to this one 10.10.5. Works fine on other ipads and Macs.

All working fine, but messages won't open. Fonts OK. Tried the Alt-com-P-R restart. Wont open from applications.

Try to open from top bar, where there is icon, or from app folder, and just get a short white flash across top browser bar.

    Humm,

    Exactly what was transferred ?

If it was the while OS and the Users Home folder then the Keychain may have the Serial Number of the old computer.

Open Keychain Access and find the IDS:yourAppleID-Auth Token and then restart Messages.

Having same difficulty with MacBook Pro. Messages stopped working after last update. McAfee is not installed. Please let us know if anyone finds a fix.  I've tried the other suggestions.

I'm counting in the El Capitan system upgrade on 9/30/15 to fix the Messages problem, because nothing else has worked so far.

    Hi,

The issue in this thread turned out to be about the Anti-Virus app McAfee not being ready for Yosemite.

There have been 2 more Updates to the OS since this thread was started.

If you don't use McAfee  then you have a different issue.  (there can be many reasons why an app will not work).

I would start a new thread.

I know this is an old thread, but this seems to have solved (so far) my recent issue with Messages refusing to open in Yosemite.  I do not have McAfee.  I'm curious about what that key sequence does.  Can you tell me?
