Slideshows now in iTunes; how do I share from there?

Couldn't burn slideshows b/c iPhoto Share in top menu greys out "Burn" and bottom Export gives no burn choice. So I went with iTunes (automatically checked anyway). Now the photos (in several slideshows so far) are not sharp, and I don't know the next step to get those slideshows from iTunes to others via burning a DVD. (But first, how do i improve sharpness; the original slideshows have perfect clarity. I used "medium" instead of "large.")

10.8.5; iPhoto 9.4.3; iTunes 11.3.1; and lots of unused memory. I don't use iLife.

iPhoto '11, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Remember that making a DVD from a slideshow involves massive compression and in two phases.

First, when the slideshow is rendered into a movie all those images are scaled down the the output size. For this reason choose the largest size. It will give you the best quality.

To burn a DVD for a domestic DVD player you need an app to author the disk, like iDVD, Toast or Burn. iTunes no such ability. When you encode the DVD, the slideshow is mashed down to DVD size, which is standard (not even HD) TV. In that case the results are in the lap of the gods. You've no idea what will run out. Another f the many reasons why DVD is going the way of the floppy disk.

As to how you share, it depends on who you want to share with? You can share movies by dropbox, YouTube Vimeo and all those. Or burn a DVD. Put it on your own website. Whatever.

I read somewhere that making an iMov would not preserve my captions, so I used iTunes b/c it was recommended in a much earlier Q&A in one of these communities. And I plan to share with my sons, who each have Macs with more bells and whistles than I have. Yes, your reply did help me. It also depressed me. It seems that every time I'm ready for the next step the rules have changed and I have to again purchase something new. I'll be back online when I recover. Thank you.

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar. For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.

Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.

Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com. Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.

Why iLife 09 instead of 11?

If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.

Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
