I'm trying to set up my new iPhone using iCloud - I entered my apple ID and password and selected the backup to restore from and everything transferex to the phone just fine, nothing miss. But every now and again it is asking for my mates Apple ID password with his email address. I have never used his ID to buy anything or anyone else ID to buy anything so why should it keep doing this?

Please go to Settings > iTunes&AppStore and check the Apple ID what's signed in on device.
Very well possible that you downloaded an App using by your friends' Apple ID before. In this case what you're supposed to do is that "instead of updating app you should remove it and then re-install it." As you mentioned you setup your iPhone from iCloud backup. )) That's the reason why you've faced this problem.
If the same issue persists,you can perform hard reset, reset all settings ..
If you've still have hassle, then write down here.. another solutions will be offered..
---> Reset all your settings&content (Settings > General > Reset.) and then setup as a new iPhone and only sync contacts from iCloud and then download apps from AppStore.. (you can avoid problem this way, too.)
What about your backup? Well there's two reasons why you do see it. Either; you already signed in with Apple ID before, or your backup included an app downloaded by another Apple ID.
E.g. I've seen many people who have activation lock issue due to backup. Even if they never have Apple ID, due to backup it comes up on device. 🙂
---> If have've downloaded only some apps, you can remove it from device and re-install with your own Apple ID. Or reset your device and setup as a new and you see that "you'll never face this issue until you sign in with 2nd Apple ID on same device."
Matty I feel for you! I recently changed my Apple ID password (just the password). I received an e-mail message sent to MY account, but addressed to my husband. We have never shared apple ID's or phones in any way. I'm perplexed and sad that I can't just make a genius bar appointment anymore to show someone what's happening.
The ID is my ID in the iTunes settings and as I mentioned I have never used anyone's Apple ID to purchase anything anywhere. So really confused as to why it would say this.
What are you doing when this happens?
Did you check your info on appleid.apple.com ? If you register rescue email, that's why Apple send an email both of you. 🙂
